Comment about the Jingle Dancer
I have know this Lady since she was 18. She started out as a Fancy Shawl Dancer. She always looked to Elders for questions and quidence wether they were native or not. She becomes defensive quickly when attacked I know the Elders who gave her permission to dance Jingle and the live on reservations. She does not dance for money or compitition. She dances for prayer and healing. She also teaches young children. If she bowed out of the so called compitition jingle slide, you should of went to her in the traditaional manner and asked why. To many people jump to conclusions and put their 2 cents in and I can say even though I was not there that I am her charge and adopted Father. This is not the first Pow Wow where she did not dance the Jingle Slide. So before you become judgemental of others go to Elders and the person themselves in a good way and ask questions. Remember the saying "Those that live in glass houses should not throw stones."

Well, someone is hiding or not telling the truth. You can't just change protocol because of your inadequate upbringing. If she was told not to sidestep then she was taught in a bad way. Your glass house has a big crack.

I didn't teach her. All I was saying is that she chooses not to do the Jimgle Slide. She would rather do a healing dance than a show dance. My Tipi don't have any windows.

All dancers in all categories by tradition are required to know all songs and to dance their style. Too bad your protogé wasn't taught this all known tradition. By the way, your tipi is sitting on top of messy cow-pies.

She knows all the dances and the songs. She chooses not to dance the Jingle Slide. The last time I looked WE have the freedom of choice. Were you there at the Pow Wow?

Why don't you use the Tommy Nitewolf login? That one sounds cooler than the lonewolf (I understand if you forgot your password and had to make a new login, those things are so hard to remember). Lonewolf sounds too much like Chuck Norris... although don't get me wrong, i love Chuck, he's the only man that can slam a revolving door!

The side step was not invented for contest, this step is the original step used for the healing dance.
I can see that this topic started out as a simple request for feedback and it turned into confrontation and criticism The Jingle dress dance is a healing dance. Traditionally the side step is used. The dancers dance in a line, being respectful not to pass another, the eldest of the group is the first in the line. Regardless of the step used, any woman wearing the jingle dress is dancing for healing and proper care for the dance, the dress and the self is important for this dance. Anyone learning this dance must learn from an elder with knowledge of the dance, also from dancers who know the dance and tradition. There is a protocol, such as knowing what to do before the dress is put on, while it is worn and after it is taken off, there is a progression of steps to achieve, a feast and ceremony for a jingle dress before it is worn for the first time, which most women do not observe when they choose to wear the dress (traditionally they are chosen to wear the dress). It is important for this girl to learn from someone who knows the tradition and the original story of the dance, so when she is confronted with questions, she can answer them truthfully and without confrontation and defiance. from an Anishinabe jingle dress dancer |

At many contest powwows throughout the country, I see jingle dress dancers called upon to dance a side step for healing for a particular person or situation. They're usually told to remove their feathers and not carry a fan. Is this necessary (removing feathers) if the dancers are not Ojibwe or not familiar with healing ceremonies?

I'm so tired of the bickering. All of you need to grow up I feel like in school again. The disrespect that came to me, was when you jumped on me standing at the east gate. You said and I quote," If you are going to represent the jingle you need to learn this step." I am jingle and I don't represent the jingle. Then you went to the circle, in women's traditional cloth regalia went out and started to do the side step. Why does no one say anything to you? This Pow wow was intertribal. If you do not know what that means it means ALL tribes and ALL Traditions. We need to start remembering your nor mine traditions are the only ones out there. What you should have done was come up to me gift me tobacco and ask me the question. Another thing, if you read the quote from Mishiike this is my Uncle and he told me when we were at the powwow if you have a problem with me to give him a call. Need his number look up AIM he is on the G
