Question Beaded Apron Design Patterns

I'm curious...

For those that wear a beaded apron and dance trailer with their dance clothes (myself included), where did you get the beaded design and color patterns from?

a. old photos

b. museum pieces

c. clan or family design patterns

d. other source

This query dates from November, '05, and nobody wants to take the ball and run with it.

I just designed a breechcloth and trailer which another party is beading, as we speak. I used old and recent photos, and I used an old vest that I have for some ideas. It took about 2 1/2 hours to lay it out on graph paper. The colors I chose are a little muted, and most are of "transparent" beads, not opaque.

On the stuff I have been working on I can say this:
Historical photos and museum stuff for a feel for the design, balance and color work. Nothing copied. Once you get a feel for the art you can create your own. Now having said that I don't believe any of my stuff will ever compare to the old work.

A & B I just started working on a beaded set. I plan on wearing it at Kaw. Is anyone else going to Kaw Ilonksa or powwow?

I'm almost done beading my son's apron. I just asked him what he wanted & he said a horse. Then on my break at work I was watching the sunrise (I work overnight) & thinking about my son because he always wakes up at sunrise & thought hey I should make it a horse at sunrise caue that would remind me of him so I drew it up at home & started beading. I do all my designs that way, I ask what they want & think about it & then at some point the design comes to my head, I draw it up, show it to the person & get to work. I' m adopted so I don't have family designs & my husband is bear clan (me & the kids obviously are not) so his family designs all got bears & stuff so I can't use those for the kids.
