feather roach

okie dokie, so no new threads for awhile in these here parts.. i gots a question ill throw to just to see if anyone bites...

So my friend is talking about his roach that has been passed down that he never uses and he shows it to me awhile back and it has the little bitty feathers coming up from the base (woven hair not yarn) the feathery part is just at the top of the roach and is only maybe say an inch long, and they were red.
I dont think anything of it really, i guess i figured it was something unique or whatever so i didnt really look into it and he didnt really know about it. later i get asked to wrap a roach for a friend of mine. she is a museum curator and says she has an old roach that was on display but she would like to store and doesnt know how to wrap it. I say sure no problem and go to help her wrap this roach that had been donated. lo and behold it is the same sort of roach as the one my friend had. its an old school roach with a hair base, its shorter and has those little feathers..
so now im a little curious and i start really paying attention for awhile to see if i notice anyone wearing them that i know. eventually i notice a fancy dancer I know dances with a roach with similar feathers, but they are blue and there is more of them so I figured it was a sort of homage to the style of feather roaches they sometimes wear.
then i see a straight dancer i know who has one, and it is an old style roach with little hawk feathers instead of little red feathers. so i ask him about it and he says that it was a common thing for our people (he is ponca omaha and was referring to omaha, ponca, osage, kaws and quapaws) to have roaches like that and basically just said that was how they were at one point.
I was just curious if anyone knows more about them.. i find them curious because i dont really see them alot and i dont really see them in old pictures either, so im wondering if it was maybe an old thing to distinguish something or idk.. anywho ill see if i can find a pic to show what im talking about

Your bud was right...they were pretty common at one point in time. I made the one JoeB was wearing that you mentioned. He said he wanted one like they wore back in the day but didn't like the feather crests much and I can't say I blame him. Not sure if there is any info to give you on it. From what I can tell it was more of a fad than a tribal specific thing.
