otter breastplates

I've noticed in many of the old pictures of straight dancers that some of them have what looks to be something similar to the otter breastplates of the omaha grass dancers. I've also seen a few dancers every now and then wearing them today. Does anyone know the significance behind those? They look really cool, but you don't see a lot of dancers wearing them these days.

Reason you do not see them much is they take a time to make right....and the otter is a pricey pelt, but made mine from a second hand shop large womens stolle and it turned out good with the brass and steel thimbles plus mirrors and ribbonwork.

They take time and most people do not want to do them. Breastplates are faster.
