Thank you.

Keep in mind that this is only a small introduction, and should not take the place of the oral history and traditions as told by elders of many of the tribes mentioned.

Fantastic read Historian...did a great job putting all of this together.

I learned a bit more than I did before reading your "report". Deffinately something that needs to be kept around for younger folks to read as they are comming up.

Thanks

Had a good time this weekend at the black bear dance. It was interesting to hear the history behind it, I hope it goes on.

It was nice to dance and not worry about grand entry, contests, etc. Just dance. Of course the singing was good. There's nothing comparable to dancing to Ponca songs in white eagle, its a good experience/feeling.

It is a work in progress, as the information just covers the "tip of the iceberg". But thanks.

first off, the Dheighan complex that gave rise to the Hethuska, Inlonshka, etc. began with the Dheighan groups, then it was borrowed by the Pawnee. Why did Wissler switch it? He was heavily influenced by Murie, his primary Pawnee consultant. Murie stood up for his people, his home boys, and gave Wissler the impression that it began with the Pawnee, when in fact, went the other way.

Your linguistic discussion is weak, mainly because the sources you should be looking at rare. Browner's work is flawed in so many ways. There are many other sources you should review if you are serious about this work.

I'm not sure why you wrote this and where you are going with it. if you would like some academic advice/assistance, pm me.

Ponca hethoska "2009"

In 2008,I attended both Ponca Hethoska's.They have it twice a year. The first HETHOSKA dance starts in April.then the commitee dances its last dance of the year in october.Ive sang at every ponca hethoska for the past 7 years.Im glad ive had a chance to sit with Eli Warrior and observe the way he handled the hethoska songs for the commitee. He's got alotta good head singing jobs on his resume and will definately be mentioned among the poncas as one of our best ponca tribal singers.he's got alotta history with my family.the collins family.my dad Henry Collins is the one who brought Eli around the drum when they were younger.i couldnt believe that when i first heard it.but its true.there good friends who have sang with each other for over 40years. The nudahonga (the leader) announced the new head singer HENRY COLLINS (PONCA) as the new head singer for the PONCA HETHOSKA.Our drum is preparing to reastablish the OLDSTYLE OF SINGING during our PONCA HETHOSKA.EVERYTHING AT THE HETHOSKA FOR "2009" WILL BE A FRESH START.A NEW STYLE OF SINGING.YOU WILL HEAR PONCA SONGS AT THEIR BEST.A NEW AND STRONGER ORDER OF PONCA SONGS.WE KNOW WE HAVE JUST RECIEVED ONE OF OUR TRIBES HIGHEST HONORS.AND THAT IS TO RUN THE DRUM FOR THE PONCA HETHOSKA.FOR YEARS SINGERS WERE ABLE TO START A SONG DURING THE HETHOSKA.THEY WOULD SING OUR PONCA SONGS SURE.BUT THEY DIDNT SING THE REAL SONGS,THE ONES THAT HAVE STORIES OF WAR,COURAGE,RESPECT.WE LOOK DOWN ON THEM SINGERS WHO WOULD BE SITTING AT THE PONCA HETHOSKA STARTING SONGS THAT DIDNT HAVE ANY WORDS IN THEM.IF YOUR GONNA SING AT THE PONCA HETHOSKA YOU BETTER BRING THEM REAL SONGS WITH YOU.THE KIND YOU DONT HEAR EVERYDAY.THE OLD ONES.NOT THEM "NO-WORD" "SONGS".BUT IM PROBABLY THE MOST EXCITED PERSON WHOS WAITING FOR THE HETHOSKA TO BEGIN.YOU GUYS GOTTA HEAR THESE OLD SONGS WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON.THE "CLASSICS" EE-GAH-ZEE SONGS,WOLF SONGS,TROT SONGS,FAST SONGS,MEMORIAL SONGS,ALL OF IT,WE'RE PREPARING TO BRING THE PONCA HETHOSKA BACK TO BEING AT ITS BEST.THE DANCERS WHO MADE IT TO THE HETHOSKA IN OCTOBER ONLY GOT A LITTLE PIECE OF WHATS TO COME IN "2009".WE LET YOU GUYS OFF EASY WITH THOSE FAST SONGS.AAAAYE!!!
THOSE GUYS LASTED OUR FAST SONGS DURING OUR CLOSING SESSION.IT WAS CRAZY CAUSE MY DAD PUSHED ALL OF HIS SINGERS ON THE LAST FAST SONG.WE SANG IT 6 OR 7 TIMES THREW,AT FULL SPEED AHEAD.I SAW ALOTTA WHITE FACES THAT WERE RED WHEN WE FINISHED.WE FINISHED STRONG AND EVERYONE WAS HOLLERING AROUND THE SINGERS AND DANCERS SOUNDED LIKE A FIERCE WAR PARTY. I DONT CARE WHAT THE NATIVES SAY ABOUT THE HOBBIEST WHO PARTICIPATE.THESE ARE ALL GOOD PEOPLE FROM GOOD FAMILIES WHO HAVE GOOD WAYS.THEY RESPECT THE DRUM AND WHAT IT STANDS FOR.THEY KNOW OUR WAYS AND RESPECT THEM.THEY TAKE PONCA PEOPLE IN THERE HOMES AND TREAT THEM LIKE FAMILY.THEY DONT BRING ANY KIND OF DISRESPECT WHAT SO EVER.THEY WANNA BE GOOD PEOPLE AND HELP OTHER PEOPLE THE WAY OUR ELDERS USE TO.THATS ALL IM GONNA SAY ABOUT THIS.UNTIL THEN THE CALIFORNIA HETHOSKA BETTER START GETTING PREPARED FOR THE FAST HETHOSKA SONGS,CAUSE THERE FIRST ON THE LIST BEFORE PONCA IN APRIL.

I wrote this to help out those who may not know very much at all about the topic.

I'm still interested in any advise or assistance, and I have sent you a PM to that effect, but I've not received any reply as yet.

I dont care what the natives say about the hobbiest who participate.these are all good people from good families who have good ways.they respect the drum and what it stands for.they know our ways and respect them.they take ponca people in there homes and treat them like family.they dont bring any kind of disrespect what so ever.they wanna be good people and help other people the way our elders use to.thats all im gonna say about this.until then the california hethoska better start getting prepared for the fast hethoska songs, cause there first on the list before ponca in april.
holay hell, uncle henry collins got the drum at ponca, i'm so there, hey brotha robert how's it goin, i'm really enjoyin them youtube videos. Keen guy!!! Hows bro bruce??? Tell unc henry, congratz and i'll seen him out in april or maybe earlier!!!!!! -erwin morris

Kewl, i'm definatley there in april. First weekend huh?? Okay i'll jot it down on the calendar. I bet unc henry is pushin' them ole' skool songz. I'm a big fan of them ole' he'thu'shka songs myself. Even at home, macy, i try to sing them, not too many eager singers wanna learn the ole' songz but they wanna be 'singers'. Have to put up with youngsters at the drum. How's brotha jarod? Hear anything on him. Miss talkin' to my brother. Well, if you have any time, holla at me. My number is 507-637-7057, yeah, otoe encampment was off the chain. Heard good contest songs, i did alot of concertrating while dancing. Was really tryin' to place. Jus was suprised when i placed in both contests. Well, you hear anything on your new regalia from them peeps in red rock, for winning the regular contest?? Well, i'll let cha go here ka'ge, holla at me sometimes and happy new year!!!!!!!!

Growing up I have always understood In.LOn.SKA means "playground of the oldest son." In.LOn.Pa in our language literally means the oldest son. SKA.STE is how say to play. LOn is how say we thunder or lighting.

So with that being said In.LOn.SKA means "The movement of the oldest son."

Damn boy, I have no idea how you get in a car or walk through a door with that big ol' head of yours. But trust me, you can dance, but you aren't the only person that can (you are not all that) and you and your family aren't the only ones that can sing. You have a nice family, but I'm surprised your dad hasn't straightened out your ego. You showed a lot of disrespect to the Grayhorse district and to all the folks other than the Collins crew that sit around the drum. Get over yourself or at least try a little humbleness.
