silver polishing - before or after

Should I polish my silver before putting it up? Should I wait until right before a dance? Should I polish and then put in a plastic bag?

I just got two tubes of Simichrome Polish and I am ready to go.

Before or After? ....just depends on how you feel? When I'm at a pow-wow I can't wait to get undressed, clean up and eat. Polishing silver is the furthest from my mind. When I'm at a dance, no way, just want to get undressed and head out, maybe stop at Dennys or IHOP and eat with relatives then get home. My answer would be, the day after. I open up my suitcase and air stuff out, wash, refold and then polish.

I don't use plastic bags, I wrap/roll up my silver in cloth.

I also polish after I get home. Some of my stuff is in cloth bags, but I also use paper towels and ziplocs.

I generally do a checkover/repair evening on monday or tuesday, and then again the night before the dance- clean both times if needed.

I only polish when packing my stuff up to go to the powwow. Cared for silver would never tarnish over a weekend. If you bugger up your silver within the time frame of a powwow, then you're doing something serious.
As we all know, German silver is a mostly nickel alloy that contains no silver. This allows it to be polished with more aggressive polishing agent w/o damage, and also to not tarnish. We all know it does, but takes quite a long time under the right conditions. The only product I use on german silver is Brasso, and I use it with 100% cotton cloth.
You would never want to polish real sterling silver with something like brasso. If you are talking real silver, then I'd suggest Wright's and/or Tarn-X. Get the bottle of the blue liquid. That also works fast. First, rinse the silver in tarn-x which will instantly remove any tarnish. I then go to the wrights as a polishing agent, but before you switch to wrights, make sure the tarnx is thoroughly rinsed off or the whole process can be counter productive.
After a powwow, things get packed away and left alone. Your silver will do what it does, which is tarnish. By design, these products we use to polish are actually the cause of the tarnish. Polishing compounds do what they do by taking off a microscopic layer of metal, thus taking off the corroded layer (tarnish) and or smoothing out the scratches. Polishing agents do this by their abrasive ingredients and chemecals that basically eat away at your silver. Most good products use both methods together. So unless you rinse every bit of polish away, you will have traces left on there to turn the metal during storage. and polishing the right way is so quick and easy that storage is a non issue.

I clean mine up as I need to. This may mean before and or after use/packing.

Has anyone ever used tooth paste? I remember using toothpaste while in the Army on the brass ensignia.
