Sneak up?

For those straight dancers in Oklahoma who only straight dance in Oklahoma this is not an issue. But for any straight dancer who contests outside of Oklahoma, more than likely the straight dancers had to dance with and against Northern traditional dancers.

When this happens what are you supposed to do. Get on one knee and act like a traditional dancer?

This past weekend a straight dancer was in a combined group and walked off when the announcer called for the second song to be a sneak up.

If you are a straight dancer, what would you do?

If you are a spectator, what have you seen straight dancers do?

we dont drop to a knee......we stand and shake one leg and if we have mirrorboards we hold them up a little as if signaling......i had to do that a few times......i seen a few straight dancers dance a crowhop northern style but i saw one horse-trot before.......in denver there are maybe 5-6 straight dancers left and a ton of northern dancers......lots of southern drums here though....waterbird, cozad jr ect

I wouldn't.

What he did or ask for a no frills Southern song if the first song didn't come from the Center Drum (presuming one exists). This would depend upon my own perceived level of potential performance.

I was never a contest guy but if I looked up and determined that five guys could overstep and I would still not place? I would have scratched to begin with.

straight sneak-up?

I've done almost every kind of way. Down on one knee shaking looking between my hands; standing up shaking both legs; standing shaking one leg; holding up fan; holding up mirror board...or just walking zig zag. It's fun to dance, and I will if I get the chance.

A note about the old way of the sneak-up. It was a Lakota Wounded Warrior dance. It had one song that I knew of, and the song was turned loose on the fourth time through, not on the third time through, as is mostly done nowadays. Each drum roll, the dancers would be a little closer to the circle center.

I don't speak Lakota, but the beginning words of the old song sounded like,"Le yuha manipe."

Sneak up original song

AmigoKumeyaay posted that sneak up clip early in this thread, and I tuned it in for the first time this evening. Surprise! The original Wounded Warrior song was being sung. I first heard this song in South Dakota in the 1960's, sung by Benjamin Black Elk of Manderson.

I really appreciate that y'all are discussing this. Hopefuly, some of these MCs round here will learn a thing or two. Besides, I have been curious about how some of y'all fellow Straight Dancers handle this uncomfortable expectation.

I learned to Straight Dance when I lived out west. I learned about other dance styles too and learned that Sneak Ups are a northern dance. Then, I moved out to the east coast and found all the dance styles getting lumped together from the looks of it. The MC would call out all the men's traditional dancers and not specify whether northern or southern then when we're in the circle announce a Sneak Up. And I'd be like "what? You expect me to dance what in this regalia? Did you take a look at what I'm wearing here? I can't get down on my knees and sneak up on nothing in this!" Sometimes, I'd try and end up steping on my apron or banging up my leg rattles on the ground. Sometimes, I'd run off to go pee or hide in a vendors booth or look too busy with something or.... Whatever I was feeling at the moment. I dislike being expected to dance Sneak Ups but I put up with it sometimes. Lots a MCs and powwow committees round here really like having a sneak up. I guess cause its got those rumble beats and sounds really um something or such and gets dancers doing all this and that and it impresses the crowd a lot or something... No disrespect to Northern Dancers and Sneak Ups. Its all good. I just don't feel that Straight Dance regalia lends itself to dancing Sneak Ups particularly with the leg rattles being up under our knees. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak my peace here. Ho.

I suppose, as far as Eastern Woodlanders are concerned (of which I am), any powwow dance whether northern or southern is Western!

Now, I also appreciate that milehighsalute mentioned dancers mixing crowhops and horsetrots. I just can't crowhop no more, at least not like I did when I was young, but I can hold out for a horsetrot. Thanks.

Oh yeah, and those Duck and Dives they love subjecting us to round here. I mean really? I'm bound to stomp my apron trying that maneuver. I do get a bit pissed when they expect Straight Dancers to Duck and Dive. Screw it! I'm biting the bullet on that one. I usually don't even try to duck. I went down on that war party. Just call me Swiss Cheese.

sneak up? > lol i woulnt do it, id personally go sit down. ask an AD if i could get a song. highly doubtful as most northern drums don't know southern songs. best to just dance inter tribal and have fun with it. remember youre not at home.

The funny thing about the evolution of the powwow is that most popular northern drums can bust out a fairly decent southern song if requested!
