Straight dance "legend" returns to the Creator

John "Johnny" Hughes, Otoe and Kaw, departed for the spirit world on Tuesday, December 24, 2003. He was buried in Laurel, Mississippi on December 27, 2003.

Johnny was known to many for his unique style as a champion straight dancer. He had won many straight dance competitions across the United States.

A memorial service will be held on January 24, 2004 at the Otoe-Missouria Tribal Cultural Center in Red Rock, Oklahoma, starting at 12 noon. the Cultural Center is located 14 miles south of Ponca City, Oklahoma.

Thanks for the info. My thoughts are with the family. I have danced with Johnny Hughes. My priviledge. Sorry to hear and he will be missed strutting his stuff. He was a nice person, at least I thought.

WOW what a loss, I danced with him a couple of times and he was the real deal. I loved seeing him dance he was a class act. I loved seeing him dance in that yellow and black suit with his beaded vest.

Was he from Laurel, Mississippi? Just curious........

My condolences go out to his family. I hate to see winter come it takes too many of the elders.
