Trailer in or out

Do you wear your trailer inside or outside the breech cloth or apron?

I know Osages from Pawhuska and Hominy wear theirs on the outside. Greyhorse wears their tails on the inside.

This might have something do with the Kaw giving the dance to the Pawhuska and Hominy districts, because I've seen some Kaw dancers dressed similiar.

Osagesooner,

Interesting... Kaws with their trailers on the outside... is that present day or looking at old photos?

Is there a reason behind wearing it on the inside or outside, or is it just a preference?

Like many things, I was told this was something that had a meaning once but has become a preference to a lot of people. From a practical standpoint I was instructed to wear the trailer under the breechcloth in order to hold things together. It was pointless to wear a belt under the breech and then another belt over the breechcloth for the trailer. Aprons use an easier set up so who knows for sure? I put my aprons on over my trailer.

Back in the early 70"s, I was almost into the arbor with my water bucket. When Uncle Henry Lookout called out to me, "Sonny, have ever seen a horse with his *** over his tail?" I told him, "no". He said, "That's the way you're wearing your broadcloth." "Your tail goes over everything."

That day I was wearing my broadcloth "Pow-wow Style". Sure it's convenient to only use one tie. And to each their own.

Now you know.

Well that makes sense! -Albert slaps forehead with a duhhh-
Wa-zha-zhe, thanks for the story! It is always interesting to learn a little more about the Osage ways.

In the way I was taught, the difference between the aprons being over the dance trailer or under the dance trailer had a lot to do with the difference in the artwork displayed on them.

Most often, when dance trailers and aprons are designed with appliqu'e beadwork, the apron is worn on the outside, over the dance trailer. Old photos can be seen showing this style being used in the early 1900s by Ponca and Pawnee dancers.

When dance trailers and aprons are designed with ribbonwork, there are some who wear the dance trailer over the apron, and some who wear the dancer trailer under the apron, has already mentioned concerning the three Osage districts.

When dancing the Inlonshka the Trailer is definately on the outside.

At Powwows, it just depends on the mood. Sorry for the inconsistancy.
