To keep the sweat outta their eyes!!

You'll hear ALL manner of explanations, and they're probably legitimate or possible ones.

...I just like the sweatband-headband thing best. Makes sense to me!!

I've heard everything from a peyote connection to something akin to keeping ones mind on what they we're doing there in the arbor.....that is, pertaining to the War Dances.

....I've seen dancers wear the regular sportbands too, in colors to match their clothes.

Talking White Headband

Because them big boys can't get their arms up, high enough to tie the bandana's in the back of their head.

:dontknow:

I forgot to mention that this a warrior's dance of the southern plains. The white bandana was adopted as a piece of the rig, so the warrior's always had a white flag to surrender with, just to make sure no one got hurt.

Post White Headband

As early as 1917, when old man Henry Snake (Ponca) was a Tail Dancer in the Ponca Hethuska Society, he and other Straight Dancers wore brightly colored silk scarves, rolled to form a narrow band and knotted over the forehead. The solid color of the silk scarf headband matched the color of the silk neckerchief, the silk shoulder scarves, and the ribbons hanging from the silver armbands.

Old Man Snake said that the silk headband kept the sweat out of their eyes when they danced and looked good as a matched set with the other silk scarves. He also stated that the knot over the forehead was practical, so that the knot would not interfere with the hair roach in the back.

Sometime in the early to mid 1960s, some Ponca men opted to use a white dress handkerchief instead of the colored silk for a headband. For most men, it fit just right with very little excess after the knot was tied. The inexpensive trend caught on, and has been popular with Straight Dancers of many tribes ever since.

However, in recent years I have seen some dancers going back to wearing a matching colored silk headband with a large Porqupine Guard Hair Roach, or no headband at all with the shorter, more traditional Turkey Beard Hair Roach.

So what kind of headband do you wear?

1. A colored silk scarf which matches your neckerchief and shoulder scarves.

2. A white cotton handkerchief.

3. No headband at all.

I think Chad Toehay is Kiowa..... And I never liked wearing the headband. But they do keep the sweat out of the eyes. I might have to start wearing them again.

I just usually roll my old white handkerchifs if I even where one. I have used a colored headscarf matching my neckscarf.

I often just wear a white handkerchief folded up. More times than not I don't bother though. Depends on the dance I guess. I will say that tying that bad boy behind the head is a real problem if you have long hair so I can see having the knot in front is just easier. I have heard a lot of different theories about how to fold them though. One man was really particular in that you must fold it inwards so you can't see any edges. One man said it did not matter as long as you have a corner pointing up in the back. Who knows for sure? Most of the elders I have been around don't seem to make a big deal about it unless you don't have one and are sweating like crazy. Then you get teased. I have yet to get teased about how it was folded though so maybe that does not matter at all.

Most of the elders I have been around don't seem to make a big deal about it unless you don't have one and are sweating like crazy. Then you get teased. I have yet to get teased about how it was folded though so maybe that does not matter at all.
In the way I was taught, whether wearing the white cotton dress handkerchief or the colored silk scarf, the following folding method is not consider the "correct" way or the "traditional" way, so much as it is considered the method that produces the best or the neatest appearance.

The method I was taught was to start with laying flat the square material.

1. Fold two opposing corners forwad, so that the corner tips meet in the center.

2. Fold the opposing creased edges forward, so that the creased edges meet lengthwise in the center.

3. Continue to fold opposing creased edges forward until both opposing edges are each evenly folded to about 1 to 1.5 inches in width, along the center line.

4. Join both folded sections together lengthwise, creating one crease at the bottom edge.

At this point, you should be ready to tie the handkerchief or scarf to form a headband, with the folded crease on the bottom edge, and the knot at the center of the forehead.

Notes:

a) It has been my experience, that when you try and tie the white handkerchief onto you head, it is very difficult to get enough material to tie a square knot in the material while its on your head. Therefore, I usually tie a small square knot in the points of the handkerchief before I attempt to put it on. Then I simply slide it down to its proper place, with the knot in the center of my forehead. It may be a tight fit at first, but the material will stretch, especially when you start dancing enthusiastically.

b) When I have worn a colored scarf as a headband, there is usually plenty of material with which to make a square knot, so I will tie it while its on my head. However, often after the knot is tied, there will still be a length of material hanging around. So I just tuck each point of loose material into the top of each side of the headband, between the main folds.

c) The recommended placement of the headband should be set on your head so that the bottom edge, from front to back, is parallel to the ground, or completely horizontal to give a neat appearance. I have seen some Straight Dancers with the headband pushed down so far on the back, that it hits the top of their ears and drops down at a slant when looking at it from the side view. While this placement is not "wrong", some elders consider it to be a bit sloppy in appearance.

Hope this helps.
