White paint

Wellit seems that we all know that we paint our eyes when we dance. I was always taught to wear red paint when I dress out. But over the past years years I see people wearing white paint now. Whats with the new trend oh color....????

My guess is that for most folks, and I've heard it of several people before, the color white is indicative of purity in some for or fashion...whether it is keeping your mind pure/clean of thoughts or you have been touched by the Creator himself.

I have noticed many people using the white paint these days. I still wear red when I paint. I will put the eye markings as well as the red ears.

I also was taught red so I only wear red. However I would ask those that wear white since they may have different traditions. I have heard of white being used to represent the bird poo found on a battle field after the scavengers came through but I doubt that it would be related to the paint by a persons eyes. I have heard from some of the contest dancers that it just shows up better from across the arena. I think it is used for different reasons by different people.

Many years ago, Uncle Abe Conklin (Ponca/Osage), told me that when he was brought into the Osage Inlonschka dance circle at Greyhorse for the first time, at age 3 (1929), his grandmother painted him with red paint. He said she put red lines at the corner of each eye, red on both ear lobes, and red on his lips. He stated that he later learned from his grandmother that the reason she did this was so that everything he heard, everything he saw, and everything he said while in the Inlonschka would be sacred.

I tell this because this is the meaning of a style of painting for one family, in one tribal tradition. This does not mean that the red paint worn in a similar way means the same for all Inlonschka members or for all Osage. Painting, and the meanings and reasons behind it, can be very personal.

I have no idea what white eye paint means, but perhaps it may have meaning for particular individuals. Its up to them.

As for me, I will continue to wear red eye and ear paint, when and where it is appropriate to do so, with the reasons and meanings I have been taught.
