I have'nt a clue as to what you mean...... but that's only cause I've never seen a blanket or robe with a beaded strip.. only ribbonwork. Do you have a pic or something that might help us out in understanding what you are wanting?

Haven't seen any done recently, but those old time ones I've seen are done in big beads and beaded right on the blanket going across the shoulders when you have the blanket wrapped around you. Myself, I think I'd bead it on something else and then applique' it to the blanket. Most start with rosettes and then bead rows to connect them. Anything else?

There's PLENTY still being produced today.

I'm actually thinking of doing one this Winter.

From what I've seen of the old blanket strips, they we're done in big beads.....something comparable to a size 12/0 or 10/0 today I guess.

Depending on what style you're making, the designs vary. The older examples, for the most part, we're beaded separately on hide, muslin or canvas. I mean, one could bead directly onto the blanket, but, it'll be tricky, and when the blanket gets worn out.....well, it makes more sense to have it all beaded on a strip of hide than an entire blanket.

You're right, Mr. Bo :) I was just going to mention that I saw a very beautiful piece done in lazy stitch and it was beaded onto canvas.

I can't say I have seen a blanket strip done right onto the blanket before even on the old pieces. Now as for robes ... that is another story.

In have a couple of old military blankets (one air force blue, and one army green) that I am saving for some blanket strips, just haven't had the time to make them yet, and I haven't decided on which of the sketched I have draw up I want to use. I think I am going to put a crow design on the blue on and I might do the green one in more of a modern kinda design. Been thinking about using those new 11/o cuts for the modern one.

Anyway here are 2 strips from the American museum of Natural history's website...These two are in their collections and are cataloged as Sioux and Cheyenne.

Oh, I love these. They are such a lovely examples of artists using their skills to reinterpret boring old army blankets into something that suited their esthetic needs.

Styles, techniques and colors vary from Nation to Nation. Lane stitch mixed with applique and only applique are common. The size of beads used varies. I have seen quite a number of these in various galleries and museums. I've seen some old ones worked in pony beads and one worked in tiny 16/0-18/0 beads.

I've never seen one that was sew directly onto the blanket (that was Native made). That would be highly impractical for a number of reasons. (I'm having nightmares about trying to move a big old blanket around while beading with two cats trying to sleep on it, LOL.)

Here are a few pictures of various artist's work.

Thanks for posting the great pics.

I figured the ones I saw were beaded right on the blanket cuz they were cut out and the blanket was the backing.

But yeah, it would be impractical and especially since you'd probably want to transfer it to a new blanket after awhile.

Unhappy

This makes me upset now after looking at that picture. It says it's a museum deaccession, so how did this person get it and now trying to sell it? It's really hard to deaccesion a piece once it has been catalogued into a collection, there has to be a really good reason for a museum to let it go. The strip looks really nice and if I had the money I would try to buy it, just to make sure it was with another NDN person.

I would use it too, does anyone want to buy it for me???? lol

Museum deassencion huh.

It doesn't look all that old. I mean, the beads aren't anything old. They're very uniform looking, and the cloth edging on the list looks a bit WIDE.....plus, it's missing the characteristic SAWTOOTH you would normally see in some old list.

It looks like new cloth....like by some folks in Kansas....Sagebrush Traders or something, and the strip is probably like 60 years old or so.
Could be a museum piece, just not that old. It's a nice strip...don't get me wrong.....nice even work.

Anyone check out the Sellers Other Items?

See the "Prairie wearing blanket"?

Maybe it's just me, but, the cloth looked really faded there as well. Older cloth typically retains alot of its depth of coloration and just literally JUMPS OUT AT YOU.

Unless I'm just totally wrong here.

Anyone?

Most of the old cloth was what......Cochineal, Lac or later an Aniline dye. The former of the three, Cochineal and Lac are insects.....it's actually where alot of, or used to be, where, alot of the reds came from in cosmetics and dyes.

Anyway.

It's a nice piece of work that strip.

Yep, as others have said, style varies by tribe. Blackfoot and Cree and nearby nations often use overlay or applique stitch. The Lakota and Cheyenne mainly use lazy stitch. The Crow and some Plateau groups often use both stitches in the same piece. In most of the museum examples I've seen, the beadwork is done on leather or canvas and then sewn to the blanket. The rosettes and straight sections are beaded separately and then sewn together into a long strip. The number and placement of these pieces varies by tribe. I recommend you study examples from museums and art galleries to get an idea of tribal color preferences, dimensions, placement, etc.

I made a Lakota style strip about 5 years ago. Took me about 60 hours worth of work. A picture of it is in my gallery.
