Okay, so to make a crown you will need: needles, thread, beads, you will need 3 sheets stiff felt that comes in craft stores and your backing of leather or cloth. The favourable style if beads are size 11 or 12 cut Czech. The best beading needles are called big eye needles, they are a huge needle with a gap extending thru. Thread can be beading thread, cotton, or artificial sinew. You may want to buy rhinestone banding or not, if you want extra shine. Look up applique stitch beadwork how tos with images. Or you can make it unique with lazy..
Onto the crown! The typical shape is a large U upside down around 5 inches to 7 inches tall.. Size it to your nieces head. Cut out the shape on paper first. Draw on the paper the exact design, pin and bead. After beading, sew the other sheet onto the first layer so it stands straight as a board. Then put the backing onto that sheet. For the attachment, you can simply use elastic to wrap around her head with some clips. The common way is to bead two panels, sew to the crown and elastic so you don't see the elastic as much. Please reply if you have further questions!
Hope it go well!

I use heavy weight pellon, its cheap and I get it by the yard. I also use plastic canvas sanwiched between the beadwork and what ever the crown in backed with. Plastic canvas is cheap and flexible. I use it in all my beadwork except earrings..

That might be better, felt tends to wear down and fold after constant use.

ive noticed that felt wears away. i been having issues with that lately with my beadwork. its the like stiffy felt looses its stiffness. i'm trying to ditch my felt and just go with canvas lately. but does pellon wear a bit over the years?

You might use the Pope's crown as a template. Seems like that's the trend nowadays?

So far so good, my main set was done with pellon and ive been wearing it going on 12 yrs. Looks just like when I first finnished it. Of course im a bit of a neat nic I wrap my beadwork in wash cloths so it does not rub together lol

I have the bead fringe on my hair ties and by wrapping them it keeps things from tangling in them and they come out ready to wear. No foreign objects like bobby pins and earing tangled up in it .. Ive seen many a lady fumbling with their gear lol..

bead work backing, crown

I also use the heavier Pellon , it stays stiff pretty well. Also big eye needles go through easily so don't bend much and thread knots well.
