Question Do I attach beadwork to leather, or bead on the leather?

I've been doing beadwork on canvas, felt and suede for many years, but I've never beaded on tougher leather. I want to add some beadwork to my regalia, which is moosehide, but practicing with a scrap has proved near-impossible to do. My beading needles won't go through it, and my glover's needles do but I need to use a thimble and push it through and it just kills my fingers and takes forever. Is there a special way of beading onto leather like this? Or should I be doing the beadwork on a separate piece of material, and then attaching it to my regalia when it's done? If so, how do I properly attach it?

Thanks for any advice!

Hello,

Ok Is the hide soft enough to take what I call a "bite" ? Meaning the needle does not pass all the way threw the hide. When I lazy stitch I poke my needle in only so far to anchor the stitch. But make sure you take enough of a bite so when you pull it tight it wont pop the stitch. Ive seen bead work beaded and added done nice and neatly it does not look bad in my opp.

Oh I see! I'll try to put it through the top layer and see what happens!

Also, try using very fine beading needles. The thinner the better for going into hide... think in terms of when you get a needle in your arm, the thinner the needle the less it catches your skin...same for the hide.

I found using shorter needles also helped, less chance of the needle getting stressed and breaking.

Is it braintanned leather? Most commerciallly tanned leather is a BEAR to sew through.

When buying leather, it's always a good idea to have a needle with you, and TEST whether you can get a needle thru it easily or not.

There's always a needle tucked in my purse, and it sure comes in handy when stumbling upon a hide while on the road. Last year, I tested and bought one in California, of all places.

M-I, if you can't easily bead thru your buckskin, I think you answered your own question....bead your stuff on some other material, and then tack it on your moosehide.
