how to get that shading effect

I don't know if anyone can help me with this. I have long admired Edgar Jackson's work, among others, with that beautiful shading with beads in pictorial bead art. I have finally clicked with 2 needle applique but not sure how to achieve that coloring. There's so many beaders I would love to sit at their feet & just soak up knowledge. So just throwing this out there in hopes for some tips.
Thanks in advance,
Marnie

I think on some of his pieces he used very tiny antique beads. Some of the colors of those beads are no longer made. And on at least a couple of his pieces, the beads are stitched on one or two at a time. With careful bead selection and impeccable technique, one can get beautiful shading with modern beads. Other bead artists who have excellent shading in their beadwork are Pam Close and Marcus Amerman.

Thank you Czechy, I will ck out those bead artists. I know it was kind of a vague question. I just admire it so much, it's truly eye candy. I have some of those tiny beads, the smaller they are, the better I like it but my eyes aren't keeping up as well these days. :) I guess it's something you just have to 'play' with.

The smaller the beads, the more detail you can get. But yes, those tiny beads are hard on the eyes. I believe Ott Lite makes a magnifier which is worn hanging from the neck, making it hands-free.

I'm assuming they also used a computer generated pattern with some beading software? I was thinking abt a beading program but not sure what's best. I've heard good things abt Bead Tool.

I rather doubt it. IIRC, Mr Jackson was a graduate of the IAIA where he studied painting and drawing. Doing that kind of color separation is something you learn to do in print making and painting classes. Think of T.C. Cannon or Oscar Howe's works.
