Odd count vs even count peyote (gourd) stitch

I have a question in regards to odd or even count peyote. I'm doing a rope in odd count and my designs are turning/slanted. Would they be more straight if I did even count?

This is the third rope I've done and the other two were just simple swirls. I'm just starting to learn about designs but I want them to be more straight on the rope than slanted.

HELP! :) lol

Push them back in place!

Maybe you have 1 too many beads in your rows.

Actually, I don't know what you mean by odd and even count...if you're doing 1-drop, it shouldn't matter.

I guess it's one drop I'm doing?

I do not understand 2 drop or 3 drop.

Does a 2 drop work well around a rope? I'm trying to peyote a rope that will attach to a medallion I have done.

1 drop is when you only skip 1 bead when adding a new row, 2 drop you skip 2, etc.

You can make straight up and down designs with 1 drop. 2 drop designs tend to be slanted.

I've heard of odd and even count to describe flat peyote stitch.

I'm sure 2 drop would work fine for a rope unless its really skinny...but you can get it nice and tight. To start, you usually put on enough beads to go around, then remove 1/3 of them...if I remember correctly.

And to this day, I'm still trying to figure this out! LOL

I was just re-reading what Wyo_Rose put and I think I do a two drop? When I finish a row, I "step up" through 2 beads. I'm going to try just doing one and see what kind of results I get. lol

Ohmigosh, after googling an image for 2 drop, NONE of those pics are what I would consider 2 drop. They are using 2 beads at a time, then yes, stepping up through 2 beads. This might be a faster way to bead something, but I would not call that 2 drop.

I might have to draw my own pic...ugh!!

Googled 3 drop gourd stitch and this is what I got. Back in the day, we called this type of beading gourd stitch. Peyote stitch was stitched with the beads sideways instead of up and down.

Now everything is convoluted.

This is 2 drop, or 3 drop...I'm cornfused. LOL

Sideways? Is that like brick stitch?

I seen some beadwork not too long ago that was like this. I was trying to figure out how they did it and I could only think it was 3 drop. And the design it had was beautiful but I still couldn't figure out how they did it! LOL

Lots of different names.
What I see the picture of is gourd stitch which is not peyote. For Gourd, you start with a number of beads that MUST be divisible by three. You can use an odd count but you must have it divide out into a whole number and it's best to avoid prime numbers.
Misnamed, but see here for gourd: http://www.native-american-beadwork....in_Peyote3.htm

Peyote comes in many styles; flat, tubular, circular, 1-9 drop, etc. With peyote you can have odd or even count, which just refers to the number of beads in a row, which affects how you make your turn back. If it's tubular it matters less. Peyote can be done in any number of "drops", although at some point it becomes too loose to bother with, or more like netting.
All of these are peyote....
Peyote Stitch Instruction
Hope this helps. :)
