Spilling the beans!

....Except they're not beans at all, they're BEADS!!

Ya'll know what I'm talking about.

I'm working on some fully beaded leggings. I've completed about 20 square inches of beadwork so far, give or take. Until just now I had not spilled the beads once. I'm extremely clumsy normally, and I typically spill my beads 2-3 times during the course of a 3 square inch project. In my head as I kept beading with no spilling I was becoming very impressed with myself and frankly, I was starting to get quite cocky!

Well it finally happened. And do you know WHEN it happened?

8 beads into beading with my beautiful blue 3-cuts - the most expensive beads I purchased for the project and the ones I am most worried about running out of.

And of course many of them ended up in the irretrievable caverns of the couch.

I know how you feel. Keep scattering beads everywhere sometimes, especially if I get tangled in a project.

I got this bead board that has cushioned sides that are raised so that when I shift or move frantically, the beads don't go flying. It's made from a nice velvet that serves as an arm rest, bead board, and a pin cushion.

Aside from that, how are your leggings coming?

Wow that bead board sounds great! Unfortunately both incidents were from me putting the container of beads down on my laptop keyboard when I got up (I like to watch Netflix as I bead haha) and when I sat back down the bead container tipped over from the slanting of my saggy couch!

My leggings are coming along quite nicely! It's the first time I've done a project as big as this - I've mostly just done small things other than some moccasin tops and (much smaller) vinework I did for my daughter's regalia. I'm enjoying it though, it's very satisfying to see it come together and I'm loving how it looks with my dress.

Here's some pics:

This is a pic of some of the original beadwork on my jingle dress - the dress was made by my great aunt. I received it when she passed away and made it into a jingle dress.

This is a pic of my full design sketch. It's hard to see the small vinework as it's still pencil (some of it is traced over in pen from doing my graphite transfer onto my fabric piece so that part is easier to see).

And here's what I have completed so far - I've also done the flower and two leaves on the other legging. It's been pretty much eat, sleep, bead over here since my daughter is attending summer camp () I've been a beading maniac ;) I doubt the remainder is going to go this quickly once she is back at home all day again, lol.

Wow your leggings are coming along wonderfully! I haven't worked on a project that big yet. Yours looks amazing! Can't wait to see it all when it's completed. Your beadwork is so precise and lovely!

You are doing great on the leggings.

I picked up a kiddie tray with legs at Walmart 3 or 4 years ago. I put a velour bead mat on it and it is great for beading. Here's the best picture I have of it. The legs will fold or lay flat, whichever is most comfortable for you to work on. Since I've started using that, when I spill, at least they stay on the tray. I also have some of that rubbery shelf liner stuff underneath the bead mat to keep it from scooting around.

Thanks guys! I'm happy with it so far. I should get some kind of tray. I think maybe a new couch that doesn't sag down ten inches when I sit down on it might help, too.

Sometimes what works for me to pick up lost beads is to use the crevice tool on my vacuum and between the connection of the tol and the vacuum hose I put a piece of panty hose over the hose end.

I can usually salvage the dropped beads pretty quickly then.

My big groaner with my beads was I needed to travel with them to where my daughter lives and I bought two new containers that (I thought) should have been sturdy enough to make the trip in my hand luggage.

I had all my beads transferred over and silly me, organzied them by colour and shade ( so blue with blues, greens with greens etc). Everything was great until I had to run for the plane at the connection airport and my hand luggage got turned upside down and all the compartments collapsed and the beads got mushed together.

I've been trying to separate them for over 7 months now... can only do some when there is good daylight as the shades are so subtle that under artificial light they all look the same...lol

Oh Yaahl, how awful! However, when I have a bunch of similar colors to sort, that's my excuse to go plop down on the back porch in the sunlight and sort. LOL! I just pull a small pile out of the big pile, sort those, make another small pile, sort, and so on, until I'm done.

No matter how careful I am, I drop beads wherever I'm working. Do NOT know how that happens.

Has anybody not used trays? I've used trays and used without. When I'm traveling, i don't use them. I usually get the beads directly from the hank. It's actually a bit faster for me, but it depends on what I'm working on. When I'm home, I prefer the tray, but when I want to get a lil beading in before I go to bed, I don't use them.

I'm just curious, is all.

Thumbs up

I use to sit in my nice comfy recliner and had spilling problems. Then I got smart. I covered the whole chair with a thin blanket. It kept all my spilled beads from being lost in the crevices. When i was done, I'd just pick it up gently and gather the beads and sort them out. But after reading some of your ideas on here, I'm gonna check some of them out.

That's one of those spill proof-supposedly-snack dishes for kids. No, Paul, haven't, and probably won't try that. I'm good with the set up I have, but it looks like it could work.
