Suggestions for Needles

Where do you get your needles from?

Most of my work has been 11/0 on loom, and locally the only places I've been able to get anything from is the Hobby Lobby (not much in the way of trading posts where I'm at, not many NDNs here, but I digress). I ventured recently, after a long beading hiatus, to get these long-eyed needles, but they're so flimsy. I haven't been able to find anything small enough around these parts to do work without almost melting in my hands. Even getting beads is hard enough (no car, big feet have walked many miles but I'm not touching DFW area traffic)

Also, has anybody had any luck with getting an online retailer to send a sample card of bead colors? Pictures of the colors can't be trusted.

Sample cards are gonna cost you. Just keep a few out of each bead order, and string them , and tape them to a file card with the color name, and where you got them. As for needles-depends on what you are beading on, what size your beads are, etc.. There are lots of decent online places for beads and needles-Crazy Crow, Fire Mountain Gems, Rings-n-Things. I have some 4 inch long loom needles I got from a friend-can't remember where she said she got them. Other than that, I use size 10 or 12 English beading needles. John James I think is the brand.

I found out when my thread and fingers started turning garnet and cobalt. Those beads were transparent, so maybe the opaque ones won't do that. I'm sure if you call the 800 number, they could help you.

Uh-oh. My beadwork is transparent and 3-cut garnet from there. No dancing in the rain, eh?

I don't have access to many local locations for supplies either. I found beading needles... of all places... Walmart (super store) in the craft/bead/jewelry section. It's a pack of 6 needles, sizes 10, 11, 12 (2 of each) for a buck. They aren't the best but they serve their purpose and they're cheap. I work mostly with size 11 beads and the needles work just fine for loom work and free hand.

Our local one just added cloth back in a few months ago. They had gotten rid of it for a couple of years. That's where I would get the pellon for backing my bead embroidery.

I just found out about the Walmart beading needles. My daughter sent me some. There are 9 needles in the package and they go through size 15 beads beautifully. At $1.84 for 9 needles, that's really good.

Before that I was using size 12 glovers from Baker Bay Beads but they're not very long. The Walmart ones are longer. You have to use them with a light hand, especially the three smaller sizes because they bend easy, but they're a very good and cheap needle.

Baker Bay Beads is also good about letting you know if the beads you want are dyed or not. And they've got a great selection of colors of size 15s.

I like the John James loom needles :-)
