Thimble or no thimble??

Who out there is smart and uses a thimble?? My fingers get so sore, I have to finally break down and make a buckskin thimble. Too late tho!

I use some thick hide from an old project, but for big projects i try to find one of those flexible splints like you get when you sprain a finger or two, and then you can wrap (or get fancy and make a permanent sling type thing) around your thumb and forefinger and rock it.

Generally no, although I do wear a buckskin one for sewing hide after pushing a glover through the end of my finger one to many times, but I wear it opposite cuz it is always the blunt side I am poking through my finger. I did however decorate my latest regalia with thimbles.

I just use a bandaid when my fingers start to hurt a bit. I often thought about just making a buckskin one for myself, but it would take more time, and I'm usually in a hurry. LOL.

I only use a thimble when sewing buckskin together.

I don't use a thimble because no matter how hard I try to remember, whichever finger I put a thimble on, then I'll use another finger to try to push the needle. I've just built up a callous on my middle finger and to push the needle through a thicker spot where I know the callous isn't going to work, I have a little piece of floor tile that I push down on to get it through the hide. I don't push it by holding the tile in my hand---I just mean I turn the hide or whatever I'm working on so that I can push the needle up from the table, if that makes sense.

Having a sharp needle all the time helps because they do get dull after using them for awhile and I always use a glovers needle so I change the needle if it gets a little dull. (I go through a lot of the tiny beading needles!) It also helps to have a big enough glovers needle for the sinew you're using if you're using sinew instead of beading thread.

One thing I learned is never pull that glover through the hide with your teeth...no matter how tough it seems to be to get it through. It took me 3 broken teeth to learn that...I am not going to forget again...this time

Oh my gosh! That's doing it the hard way, for sure! LOL I've had to use a pair of pliers sometimes to get a needle through the hide but never tried using my teeth.

I use a scrap piece of leather to push the needle through and if the needle is hard to pull, I use the same piece of leather and grab the needle and pull it through. Works every time

Man, I've done that too! That's why the bottom of my front teeth are a little jagged. My dentist took his rotary tool across one, and it went fine then got hung up on a chip. So the bottom of my tooth looks like this: I_____^__I

i just use a piece of hide from whatever im working on, but im usually only making mocassins so its not real thick anyway.. But theres nothing worse than jabbing the thread side of the needle into your thumb.. Ugh.. I broke into a sweat just thinking about it. My fingers just got back to normal though from last week..powwow here in town and someone came to my uncle asking for some mocassins for a young girl who was to dance THE NEXT DAY... Mind you these are Omaha style mocassins, each shoe is just one piece of leather, but still, people always ask at the last minute haha. So he cut em out and i sewed em both up that night and the next morning.. Fingertips were soooore. But i got em done in time and the young lady danced in them.
