Fancy Feather dance leggin's

Hau, Hau Steve has been traveling to the four sacred directions seeking the wisdom of the elders. Steve has been to many campfires and listened to many Pau Wau stories of the olden times. Before central PA systems, before drum contests, before split categories, before casino pow wows, before the world championship of song and dance. Dang what ever happened to the world championships? You know it be Steve’s goal to find out where everything comes from in the sacred Pau Wau arena.

On one of my trips to the forests of Wisconsin I happened on the campfire of the man, the legend MR Boye Ladd. Now when you’re reading this and you see Mr Ladd’s name I want you to bow your head, to give him his due!! I digress, We got to talking about where stuff comes from and Mr Ladd happened to mention that he invented fancy dance leggin’s. This is the story of how fancy feather dance leggin’s were invented, as told to me by the famous Mr Boye Ladd.

Mr Boye Ladd was on tour, doing shows in the middle east. Mr Ladd did a show and he a groupie had a meaningful weekend relationship. Well as luck would have it, She was married and he had to make a hasty departure. Mr Ladd got lost in the desert but got lucky when Moses found him. Yes, THAT Moses. Mr Ladd spent a week wandering the deserts with Moses during his 40 yrs in the desert and they even took each other as brothers, but thats a story for another time. Mr Ladd put on a hoop dance and fancy feather dance exhibition for Moses and this tribe. Mr Ladd discovered he had lost those short anklets that they wore in those days and Moses gave him some Keen angora skins to use for leggings. Boye just rigged them up for the show, but when he danced with them they looked CHO, with all that long hair swinging around and he felt the spirit of the goat give Mr Ladd his sure footedness, his quickness and some people say, some of his randiness. Mr Ladd kept them and when he got back to the states all the other fancy feathers dances like how his leggin’s looked and they copied him. You know how people always copied. The rest is history. Mr Boy Ladd also wanted to relay that fancy dance leggin’s evolved to cloth clothes line rope instead of sheep skin. Jr Bearstail is who invented that style of leggins.

Aho, Steve has spoken!!

When I get some time I’ll tell you about my time at the campfire of the originator of the fancy shawl dance, Gracie Her Many Horses and how she got the sacred Butterfly dance bundle from the giant Monarch Butterfly spirit.

Boye Ladd forgot his goats, grabbed some southwestern cowboys goat skin chaps, cut them down to the new big size and wore them and liked them, thus creating the big new "goat." Jr Bearstail invented the nylon rope goat.

you have spoken, I have summarized!

what's next, johnny whitecloud and the cape? Gordon Lasley and the beaded yoke/apron? tell us more!!!!

Dang Johnny invented the cape?? Johnny did invent the front flip fancy feather style. I am told it was something to behold. When did Gordon do the beaded yoke and apron?

J didn't invent the cape, but he "re-introduced" it and made it popular again, so most people point to him as the "originator" of the modern one. Capes go back to the 1920s, to the early days of fancy. Like most things in life, things go away and come back.
