You know what DJs do to music, its pretty much what fancy dancers do to dance steps, take them, copy them, reverse them, remix them, whatever. Fancy dancers take steps from just about anything, but that is my opinion. I have seen all kinds of stuff.

If you try to use "grass moves" while fancy dancing. You wont look much like a fancy dancer. If anything you may look like a fancy dancer who is not trying. Grass dancers have a different "flow" if you will. The styles are too different.
But you could take the move the nor'ern ladies do. You know standing on the balls off your feet holding your hand articles in the air, with your hand on your hip (teehee).

But like the man in FLA said, if you can mix it up and make it look smooth, go for it.

peace

My favorite fancy dancer of all time - Phillip Kaiyou - used to do the move you're referring to, but he did it with speed and style. It looked really good.

If its a fast song and you want a good "transition" move, it might work well, but it'd look ridiculous to a slower or medium-paced song...just my two cents.

Fancy,

It all depends on the individual and their abilities.

I have seen fancy dancers, per se, that can't fancy dance.

Some dancers are a product of a long family line of good dancers. This is to their advantage.

A good example of this was during the recent Denver March Powwow Men's all around contest.

Jazz Bearstail, who is a fancy dancer, did an fantastic job in the grass dancing portion of this contest. Of course, he comes from a long line of great grass dancers. End result was 1st place in this contest AND in the Men's Fancy Dance Contest!!!

Boozhoo niji,

Hey Who Me I gota quick question. You mentioned the all round contest. Personally I have seen one but I know what they are. Question is, can a dancer in any catagory compete in all round?

CrazyW,

Any Indian male can compete in the "Men's" all around contest. Likewise any Indian woman can compete in the "Women's" all around.

(who knows? perhaps someday there will be an all around for two-spirit people?) *L

Most Men's all around contests have three categories - fancy, traditional and grass. In this case, dancers in the traditional portion of this contest can dance traditional, straight or chicken dance - whatever their "traditional" style is.

There is also a "4-directions" all around. In this contest there are 4 categories - fancy, northern traditional, grass AND southern straight.
