Old Style Fancy

I've been fancy dancing & i'm trying out old moves that ain't as flashy as all my bros. Are there any old style fancy dancers who kinda have that get-low, do footwork and do kinda tha old style of dancing with contemporary flare? and is tha old style of fancy dancing still even in fashion anywhere?

ld style fancy

I'm in my late 70's. I've seen some good ones from the 1950's and 1960's: Johnny Moore; Elmer Brown; Clyde Warrior; Charles Chibitty; Woogie Wachetaker; Warney Weller; Garland Kent, etc.

It was mostly in the leg movement; maybe some head nodding. The arms were angular but no whip sticks. They may have carried a small fan or flute in the hands. Feather roaches were worn as well as hair roaches, the latter always with two feathers. They did have feather rockers. The goats (anklets) were small, about 5" tall. The round bustles usually had the neck bustle smaller with an open vee at the top. Wing & tail bustles were also worn. Sequins were used often, even on the galluses and belt. More skin showed than nowadays, although some leg tights and T-shirts were worn, most often black, but could be some other desired color.

yeah....i remember there were alot less in the ways of aprons and such....i also remember when many of them would just wear western shirts too

i remember some softer stepping in the dances also......as shown in the intro to the redbone classic video

i forgot about this thread until i checked and the notorious crybaby gave me a red bead for some unknown reason.....but i dont care about online reputation ......so mr crybaby you can go ahead and red bead me away....it still wont make you indian or even knowledgable

and by the way gledanh, do you remember those half circle bustles?

The fancy dance originated with the Ponca Helushka and was at one time called the "crazy dance." (Parrish Williams and Paul Rough Face interviews). Because of it's origin it was straight up dancing with accentuated feet and head movement. The get low style of dance that you refer to was influenced once the fancy dance was adopted on the Northern Plains.
