ribbon types

Hey guys:
I know I've kinda been gone for a while but i'm finally breaking down and making a fancy set. My mom is bieng even more helpful on this set than my last one. She's been putting in alot of imput on the style and type of set I should do. Now I'm facing a large challenge. She showed me two types of ribbon, Satin, and grosgrain. I have concerns about both types of ribbon. Grosgrain seems a little stronger and will therefore hold up better. but satin is lighter and will make my set move better and feel less heavy.
right now I'm doing some big calculations on how many yard we're going to buy. Any of you guys have any good places to buy ribbon in bulk?
Another question raised is how do I secure the ends of the ribbon, burn them glue them , or cut them at an angle?

Thanks for your help

I prefer the satin ribbon because its lighter and shinier (two words fancy dancers love!) than the grosgrain. Its impossible for us to say how much ribbon you'll need...you need to measure whatever you're fringing...figure out how long you want the fringe and also the width of the ribbon...given that just measure it up.

Type in JKM ribbon on your Google search engine. Should take you to their site, or somewhere close.

I've always wondered what 1/4" white grosgrain ribbon would look like on a tradish outfit.

actually I'm using it for all the above except my bustle.

Joe's dad
I used grosgrain on my tradish set and it moves a little better than buckskin and is lighter than buckskin. I suggest it, I used it on my cuffs and it looks great.

Aaniin niji,

I have all satin ribbon in my outfit. 1/4" on my cape and aprons and 1/8" on my bustles. The satin is extremely durable, I dont know of the other material that you speak of. Just remember, you will have to get something called Rip Stop to put on the ends to keep them from unraveling.

I got all my stuff anywhere I could find it. I think I used over 200ft of 1/4". It took me about a month to get it all, I was practically there when they unloaded it off the truck, wiped out the supply of red and black ribbon in my county. Then I learned the local sew shop can order any amount I need. The place is called Jo Anns fabrics.

Good luck with the outfit.
