spinning arm bustles

hey guys;
most of you know that i'm starting of in fancy and I'm working on a pair of arm bustles(this is for my own set). and I was sitting around beading a headband for my brother and I had the idea to put the arm bustles on a spinning device . i thought this would look kinda cool. have any of you guys seen this before or have you done it before. thank you for your time and thank you in advance.

Would they spin continuously, or would they be motion activated?

well that's the thing bwhite I've never seen this eather.

rat: yeah it would be motion activated i was thinking on using a system i saw at lowes . it's made of a rather light but strong plastic rotator, it spins really easily I mean if you blow on it , it will spin like the dickens .it has a flat surface on both sides and I think it should work but I'm gonna experiment. I was gonna use 8" hackles so the arm bustles will catch a breeze.

the look I'm going for is to have the arm bustles and the whip sticks moving at the same time and in the same motion.

if anyone has any suggestions or ideas I can use to help accomplish this please share it with me .

Why not just take one of those small oscillating, hand held "pocket/purse" fans and rig something up with that?

I don't know if the weight of the feathers will be TOO much on the motor, but, I do believe you could switch it on and off.

I don't know that even a SLIGHT breeze or just regular old kinetic motion from your body would be enough to move a bunch of hackles....but, if it works.....be sure to throw up some pics or a video link or something of them in action!!!

well I don't want to have them move on a motor . i want it to have kinda a natural movement and I'm hoping that the movement of the whip sticks will move them . i'm hoping this will work . I'm going to dicks sporting goods soon to buy hackles in my three colors . I'll get a picture on here as soon as possible.

Dick's Sporting Goods has hackles?

This sounds like an interesting idea. I'm curious to see how it turns out.

Like spinners on wheels but on your arms. But would the scarf stop it all the time plus you have your arms and shoulders that will be inthe way. Probably maybe extend it out somehow so your ams, shoulders and scarf won't be in the way. Unless you keep your arms stationary for the duration of the song. Think about it, better yet, try it Put your elbows out at shoulder's height. I gues it would also depend on the arm bustle size (diameter). But good luck, hope you work it out. Nice to have a brand new dancer's perspective. I tend to be a little tradishtional with my outfit.

I would be very interested in seeing how they turn out as well. I've seen a lot of hackles in sporting goods stores used for fly tying. However, does Dicks carry enough hackles for arm bustles? Aren't they very expensive?

Spinners are nice, but I prefer chromed-out five stars or Daytons :rofl2:

Seriously though, innovation is what makes fancy dance great...keep at it!

I do agree with bwhite in that you might want to check for another source of hackles because those fly fishing hackles are much more costly than the strung ones you can find in tradings posts or at pow wows.

It may or may not catch on. . .

I have seen a lot of "newbies" come into the dance arena with their own interpretation of what a "dance outfit" is. Sometimes they look okay, but more often than not, long time powwow people look at them and say, "What the *%^##??"

Case in point. I am good friends with a dancer from Florida. In Florida he pretty much gets away with "building" new additions to his grass dance rig.

I invited him to Indian Country and took him to a few powwows. All his new paraphanalia did not go over well. People looked at him like he was a "clown." As a result, he was humbled and went back to Florida, having been set straight by Indians who powwow weekend-after-weekend.

I don't know where you are from, but it may catch on there. IF,it actually catches on, we can say we heard about it first on Powwows.com.

Spinning Arm bustles????

This might be a dumb question but how would you be able to tell if they are spinning?? I mean when Steve ties the bustles on and gets to jamming you would never be able to tell if they are moving or not....I mean if you stand around and taking pic's and saying, "Hey look I got's a fancy dance rig," they might be cute. ORRRRR if you got's no game, no moves, maybe they would be a good idea, get something moving, any way you can. Some of us just have to depend on superior conditioning and skillz. Maybe you could sell some to those southern boys, I bet Whome would buy a set.

I'm thinking of a pinwheel here Steve. The stick stays in place while the pinwheel rotates. Now pretend your arm is the stick and your arm bustle the pinwheel.

Hell, maybe just glue some hackle down to a pinwheel :D

hey guys;
well I'm glad to hear the enthusiasm about this . I think it will turn out well . I didn't get to dicks yesterday but mum says we might tomorrow. my colors are red pink and white . they look well together . I'm making a rosette for the bustles it's kinda a like the thing line that loops around and makes you dizzy .
hey guys how many oz's of hackles are needed to make a big arm bustle?

I think you could get away with 3 oz., although I'd get 4 oz. just to be sure. With 4 oz. you will most likely have leftovers, but a little extra hackle on hand never hurts ;)

Say, I like this idea enough that I would like to give it a shot too, mind if I use your idea here?

my friend:
sure . thank you for asking most people wouldn't've asked . my mom suggested using a nail that has a rounded tip and put that on whatever you have on your arm . then put a tube with a lid soldered on on one side and ther just putting the leatherdisk and hackles attatching to that . i'm just gonna buy a spinning chair wheel at lowes or wal-mart and take it apart . e-mail me at :IIIdlrbill@aol.com to ask any questions. I've found alot of info that will helpyou out.
