Talking Maybe

Maybe this project of your is aliitle too silly. How about trying to construct a dowel arm bustle? Use some smaller spikes, flatten them and get a few of those smaller hackles and tie 'em up. That would look great! But the pinwheel thing is a little too childish and leans a little into the circus realm o' things. And you could add some macaw feathers at the base of the spikes, kinda like fanwork stuff, and maybe an inch and a half of horsehair, colored or otherwise, at the tip of each spike. I like your creativity but try not to stray too far from tradional to novelty OK. If fancy dancing is a novelty to you then yeah add lights, blinkers, and all sorts of gadgets but to me I take it serious and try to keep things down to Earth. NEways, my thoughts.

Speaking of dowel/spike arm bustles, how are those things made anyway? Specifically, once the feathers are all done up, how do you get the bustle itself together?

Wal mart

I used foam board found at Wal Mart. Usually in the school supply selection. And two round pieces of leather. I sharpen the end of the dowels and stick 'em into the round piece of foam board. After I have stuck all in I then tack 'em down with hot glue, then comes the leather I back and front the foam with leather. You can either glue or stich it together. Now take some sinew and thread through the backing leather and then the front lether piece then back around. After a couple of loops start to wrap around the dowel itself and reapeat on the other dowels.

I have a hard enough time just getting my arm bustles to stay put! Let along trying to get them to spin! They do that all on their own without any contraption!

MAROOND:

So if you have some success with your spinning arm bustles . . .

do you think you will consider making spinning back bustles in your second fancy dance set?
