No...No...NO...I remember being taught that women are not supposed to sit a drum. they are suposed to stand behind and sing, the women standing is a sign of respect and honor.

I would not personally sit at a drum with a stick; but my tribe does allow women at the drum. I've heard a couple of really good all women drums in my lifetime. But I just wouldn't want to ever do this, myself.

All Women Drum!

Yes, I support women Drumming, reason being when our men went off to war. Many never came back The women were left behind to teach the children our traditions which included singing and drumming. You do not have to agree but these things did happen. It takes nothing away from the spirit of the men and their place in life.

I was raised with this too.. but there was another good point made that we cannot always be sure why women decide to drum, so i think we should be careful of how we judge them. I agree too that there are the so called wannabes... white people drumming? obviously ignorance has set in and they either dont understand the significance of the drum or they do and dont care, these people will be taken care of tho either by elders that have the right to take them out or by the creator when they answer to him. As long as the drum is respected and people are following the teachings given to them by those in authority to do so.. then i feel that it is ok.
Just my thought on the subject.

i have no problem with an all women's drum group. i have heard women drum and sing, they were just as well as the men.

from what i read in this thread, it sounds like having or not having a women's drum group is a regional.

I support the women on the drum. I once heard that before the non natives came over, women had their own drums and their own songs... I have had a dream of a all women drum group and I need to talk to an elder to see what the significance of this dream means... Right now, since I'm the only person who is willing to help our school drum group, the boys are learning the songs from me. It doesn't seem right to me, but I have asked many drummers to come and help this drum group of young boys, but as for now no man has stepped up yet. I will keep doing what I'm doing to help them because they are seeking to learn. I would love to start my own women's drum group someday if it is accepted by the elders on my rez.

nope

I was always taught that a woman shouldn't sing at the drum. I had a American Indian music class and the main objective (which I was againist) was to teach drumming to students. I almost got an F until I explained that I was always told women shouldn't be behind at the drum.

Mankillers Drum group... made up of all women?

Hmmmmm?

Do you think an all male drum called the "Lady Killers" would go over big at a powwow near you?

No, the women should not start their own drum group because that is not what the women singers should do. if they want to at a drum they need to sing behind the mens and sing to make the music sounf beautiful when they sing at the drum

I disagree to have women singing at the drum around the southern part of the united States. if the women want to sing they can but they need to sing behind the men folks that is singing at the drum.

Well i feel sorry for who eva gets stuck with you. Don't you know that there are some women that could song just as hard, and as loud as the men. Well i guess you don't really care bout that, do you?

I was an abandoned teenager when my son was born and I knew nothing to little about my culture!

You keep on going, Nativeteachin and do what your doing! I have learned it's we women who teach our children the ceremony songs from when they are babies, for powwow, for sundance, for sunrise ceremony, for pipe ceremony ect ect - if there is no father, Elders, grandfathers or grandmothers present.

Today, in quite a few Indian families (not all) there are women raising their children alone - with no father and no other families - these women are responsible for giving their children a culture, too. While facing the loneliness and struggle of every day survivial.

For if we are raised with no culture no sense in who we are as a person. How would you think you would feel? Yes -empathy. No sense of where you belong and who your people are - maybe lost even.

I think it is our responsibility as a people to learn all parts of our culture - even the Mens' part - because we are raising babies who become boys who become MEN.

I really can't tell if I returned and learned too late about my culture to teach enough of it to my son. He's learning another culture - Japanese because he can almost pass for one and has become a Sushi Chef. I am proud of him.

On another note, I met a full breed native man the other day who is Buddist - how different is that?

okay, what about Ulali? or The Blue Star Singers?
I'm from a matrilineal/Matrilocal culture. we had women's drums along time ago, before everybody started acting like the pains peeps were the only culture any of us should have. But they weren't powwow drums, as we didn't have the powwow thing. They were big, tall drums that rested on one edge on the ground. this was a long time ago. I'm not plains, or northern, or some *******ized hybrid, So I will say that I do not mind, but I'm not going to force my belief or opinion on other peeps from other Nations. You all do what you do.

For once, I don't have any profound opinion on whether women should or shouldn't be drumming; I just know that I prefer the sound of Men. Thanks.

some of you people need to talk to an elder from ojibwe country and hear the story of how we got them drums and why the women shouldnt be singing on them, it will give you better understanding of why its not the right thing to do.

Thumbs down All women drum group

I think that women are way better off standing behind the men not sitting next to them because you never know she could even mess up while at the drum because I have even heard sometimes when the women are even just doing back up they sometimes even mess that up or you have one out of tune and you can really tell. Dont get me wrong women are good at what they do but not all women.
No arguments from this chick I agree with the men on this one. DO YOUR THING MEN!

are you saying men never screw up while singing? i beg to disagree with you on this one mang

both sexes go off-beat or off-key sometime .... can remember seeing kenny scrabbyrobe smacking his boys hands with his drumstick when they screwed up while singing ...

but i have to say i prefer the sound of men singing at the drum and some women singing backup (not really into that high-pitched whiney screechy sound of some women singers - just my opinion here)
