War whoops and Side calls

It seems all the top drum groups yell numerous "heyChas," "ayy haw heyys" and Hoka Heys" side calls each time they sing. For some groups, they have become an art form. For others, they are slightly overdone...

Do these side calls distract away from the actual song being sung?

Do side calls enhance a competition song?

Do side calls improve a drum judges overall drum score?

Whatcha' think???

Me to! I hate when it sounds like they drag him by the long or short hairs!
I like watcing the pickup singers when a drum sings word songs. They really start screeming around then! It's an easy cover up for not knowing the words.

If done in the right manner, the call can enhance the song. I've heard some singers use it as a way to express their excitement about the song and the energy it is creating at the moment. I've also heard it become a part of the song as a way to end the sentence or melody of the "line". Experienced singers seem to find a way to use them without overkill. Blacklodge does this on a couple of songs. Thankfully my experience with the overuse of the call has been fairly limited.
