49 vs. Round Dance songs

Due to the recent controversy surrounding the 49 Contest at Schmitzun, I thought I would run this past the readership.
____

Round dance songs (especially those with words) are sung at most 49's.

However there IS a difference between 49 songs with English words vs. round dance songs with English words.

If you are in a 49 contest, knowledgable judges WILL know the difference and score a drum accordingly. (ie "Black Jack Daisy" is a 49 song, "Party Time" is a round dance . . . and so on.,). There are so many 49 songs that you can literally sing a different song all night and not have to repeat the same song.

In 49 country, songs are sung in sets. Sometimes two to three drums will sing at the same time in different areas of the 49. Again in 49 country, 49 songs are not mixed in the set with round dance songs - normally. However, younger singers are beginning to mix these two types of songs, due to their inexperience of not knowing the difference or not knowing a lot of 49 songs.

Round dance songs with English words are normally reserved for the last set in a 49 . . . 'bout when the sun is coming up.

Any comment?

I know that's right.

Not a 49 King huh? That title must have been bestowed upon you by someone else with a few extra powwow points then.

BrownHornet 09-07-2004 10:10 PM

49 songs are 49 songs and round dance songs are round dance songs. Knowledgeable singers know the difference. I donít think age has anything to do with it. I sing with young guys all the time that definitely know the difference. If you donít know the difference, I would suggest asking someone that knows or you may find yourself victim to the same controversy.

records_all_drumz 09-10-2004 05:03 PM

I agree Joe Fish Dupoint and Larry Cozad make it live at a nine. Millard brings a good chorus crowd with him.

Back in the day I used to 9 around Pawnee with Auk-ah-boo, Frank Adson, Steve Knife Chief, even some fellas from Yellowhammer both the Jim's. then there was a Peewee, dang they use to get it back then.

Last time I went to a 9 not too many followed the format WHOME put out there straight 49 songs, 49 word songs, round dances with words.

I usta wonder about the one round dance song that is used for a Kiowa War Mothers or something. Man them younger fellas back then usta sing it at 49's, kinda of odd.

Just my 2 cents.

records:

Steve KChief and Auk still 49 at "the south roads!"

I agree, times are changing for the worse at '9s. The big ones like Indian Hills, Indian Exposition, IICOT and even Stroud are loosing steam.

Seems like there are a bunch of kids 18 and under anymore "representing."

SBZ4life 09-10-2004 05:51 PM

Im South Roads Band...Ahhh 49ing...now I needa beer

roundabout 09-10-2004 05:58 PM

if the judges knew what they were doing, it would not have been a question as to which drum sang the right songs, it should have not even been a issue. as for the conduct of the drums, it broke several peoples heart as to the way they were conducting themselves, i will not mention which drums but they should have been disquilified for unsportmanship conduct. if this were done it would have made a lot of people behave themselves and be more respectful.

Good thread WhoMe..............................
It's rare to find a ol fashioned "9" nowadays, no matter if they singin 49 or round dance songs.

The point you bring up bout the kids "representing" is true.
This would be a another good thread we could type about.

The only good ol fashioned "9"'s that happen now are those that occur after bar time during the off season, when there are no "big" powwows going on. Or after a all gourd dance benefit or organization benefit dance.

Some of ya'll can relate..................LOL

UNCLE:

Yeah, I can relate. There was a local powwow this weekend. Several people went to one house and everybody there could jam! Every girl there could FLAT SING! So yes, I can relate!

Roundabout:

I agree. It is the committee's duty to lay down specific rules to deter this type of situation. It is the head drum judges duty to pick knowledgable people to carry out the letter of these rules.

It is unfortunate that the Schmitzun 49 contest will cause bad feelings between drum groups and individuals for years to come.

ND5:

This is the second verse of a round dance song title "Crow Indian Fair and Rodeo." The second verse was amended to include "American Indian Exposition."

In both versions, the lyrics start with "We will see you next summer time. . ."

records_all_drumz 09-13-2004 03:55 PM

That's the song I referred to as sounding too close to a Kiowa War Mothers song.

I don't care how buzzed up I got I never sang that one or even helped out.
