Okay, how about coming in with your voices.

When is the appropriate time?

great question.... does it vary from song to song? Different for a straight song vs. a trot or a shake song, or a really slow flag or memorial song? Mid-way through the first part? wait till the second part after the loud beats?

c'mon ladies.... shed some light on this one

(of course, I suspect WhoMe already knows a bit about this - he's like a super sly attorney who rarely asks a question if he doesn't already have a goot idea of the answer! SOOOO - how were you taught on this matter?)

Several things I've noticed over the years, mainly at Ponca. It's a center drum. The women don't stand; they sit. They stay at the drum unless there is an emergency call to leave.

A few years ago, the women complained about the use of the term "chorus girls" to describe them, because of it's obvious connotation. Presently, the Emcees and headmen try to use the term, "lady singers".

Nowadays, a few of the women wear slacks. In the 50's and 60's, most wore dresses or skirts, not necessarily Indian clothes. Of course, always shawls. The women singers do not dance unless a song "moves them", and then they stand at their chairs and "march" or "bob" in place. Some of them dance to circle the drum during a series of committee songs; that would be the only time. Some of them stay at their seats during that time. There is a "lady singers' song" which is sung with this series. During this song, the male singers will normally stop singing during the second verse of the song to let the lady singers finish the "pushup".

In The Old Way of things, male or female singers were asked by a committee member or head singer to sit at the drum. For the first time, a person could give away for the honor.

I think standing at the drum is more of a powwow multiple drum thing, where the women singers, if they wish, motate from one drum to another.

"No one knows 10% of anything."
