Got me to thinking....

In the "spirit" of one composing their own songs for the pow wow...what does the Ponca think about non-Ponca composing songs to satisfy a Trot Dance request?

The same question goes out to the Kiowa in response to Horse Stealing Songs.

One might ask, if it's not a Ponca song is it a Trot Dance song? Likewise, if it's not a Kiowa song is it a Horse Stealing Song?

And by the way, does that category of song, which uses trot dance songs and horse stealing songs and maybe even crow hop songs have a name? Can they all be generically called trot dances?

hmm... there's several non-Ponca southern groups that have "trot" songs.... there are some goot one, but of course some of them are kinda screwy, like the guys just put a southern song to a crow hop style beat, w/o really knowing what they were doing. (I'm in the SW - where too many people just pick up styles w/o understanding the meanings, teachings, histories, etc...)

If you can make one that is structured properly, as a dancer (not as a singer, and certainly I'm not speaking for Ponca folks) I don't think that you'd run into too much of a problem. The issue would be if you try to put Ponca (or any other tribe's other than your own) words in that song. Just stick with vocables. Too many variables in pronunciation, grammar, nuances of meaning, to be messing with another tribe's language.

Of course, the best way to do it might just be to learn Ponca songs from some Ponca singers who can address all of those issues....

Let Composers be just that composers and singers just sing!! instead of trying to come up with something,,, you should call an uncle or your folks and ask them !!If you don't have that travel To an area where folks can help you all you have to do is ask!! and not over a chat room around the Drum there are many Singers who would offer help!!
