Southern Eagle is a southern drum straight out of Maxton NC. This is a young group and this powwow is by far the largest they have done. Not too experienced so I hope all goes well. I heard Blackstone was northern host.

Is this the same Southern Eagle from NC? From what I hear, there is also a Southern Eagle out of Oklahoma.....Just making sure this is the same group.

I was glad and scared for them at the same time. This is a big powwow and I wish them the best. However, being a young group, they only know a few gourd dance songs, and as far as I know, no trot or horse stealing songs or any other kind of "special" southern songs. Being host, they might get called on to do it. But they are in my prayers and I wish them the very best. I will be singing my butt off in Durham.

SDS,

I agree wholeheartedly. These guys are getting their name out there, but still (as do we all) have a long way to go. I know of some good folks that are going down there that may be able to help them out if needed. I wish them the best!

It sounds as if they should not have accepted teh job if they dont know the songs. Organizations pay lots of money for these groups, they expect them to perform. Maybe they should have stayed a little closer to home and learned the songs first. Anyway, I wish them the best of luck.

These guys are a good group of guys. They are eager to learn the gourd dances and the other special songs. They just didn't have time to learn them before the powwow. WHich is fine. the way I think you had to do for this powwow was send in applications for host position. So apparently they didn't ask if you could sing the specialty songs. Hey Singer that would be great if they could help them out. Just remember these guys this weekend. Maybe they will just have straight competition.....who knows?

My intention of the original post was to wish them good luck and to tell everyone to think of them when they go....it is their first really big powwow. That's all......I don't intend to post on it anymore if it is gonna go to this.....later

SDS - you might've known that people would react this way when you spilled the beans that these guys don't know the special songs that are expected of them.

I have a suggestion. When these guys get there (it's too late to back out), maybe they can strike a deal with one of the other more knowledgable southern drums to do these "special songs" and fork over a good portion of their host drum loot.
They'll save face and they'll be helping somebody out at the same time.

I've never seen this done before, but it's worth a try.

Methinks they're going to need more than luck.:Cry

BLF,

Granted, they may not be the top choice for host, but hopefully they'll do a good job and it'll be a great experience. Everybody is wishing these guys well. Every young group probably needs an experience like this. Maybe this will help to get these guys really off the ground and in the swing of things as far as Specialty songs go. And who knows for sure...maybe we're ALL underestimating them!

I am somewhat inclined to agree with Singerdad. Knowing Singerdad, I can tell you he speaks from experience. He knows how it is to be a head singer/host drum, and may have even learned the hard way. While he may sound harsh, he knows what he's talking about. This is a huge responsibility! Is Southern Eagle wrong for accepting the responsibilty? Who are we to say?
