How did you become interested in singing?

ok...................

I'll go first...... when I was a young guy dancing I always liked the songs, but I never had anyone to teach me and I didn't want to go out to the center drum not knowing anything and messup, so when I got with my woman, Her dad and brothers were singers. They invited me to practice and the rest is history.....I still got lots to learn but I think I am doing alright, with dancing and hearing the songs all my life made it really easy to pick up the songs and beats.... I know younger guys that are becoming interested in singing and I always invite them out to sit by me(not that I am no expert) but I figure I can help them to sing.

On thing I like about singing is the old timers.... to hear the stories they have and the jokes....... they have lots to teach!

Welp...its like this...

I've always related well with the "old timers"....

&

it took one man and that drum to hook me, and another drum to send me on my way.....

My first experience w/ a southern song was by J. Kemble and Co. (i.e. Yellow Hammer). I was hooked by the sweet leads and sounds of the group. However, it wasn't until I learned the Cedar Tree song composed by the late Austin Sebastian that I picked it up.

God Bless Austin!

Cool

Hey,

I started out singing Northern Style in Seattle, WA (I am not from there). I sat with a drum and did pretty well. I learned alot and had the chance to lead a few times. When I moved back home in North Carolina, I was invited to come to a practice for a Southern Style drum. I had a great time and jumped in with both feet. I took note of the differences and adapted. I looked forward to learning from the other guys and using and sharing my experiences and abilities.

That is how I got started singing. :agree?:

How i got into the singing Circle would have to be when i was growing up. My dad had his own drum group happenin back in the 80's and i was a grass dancer at the time but when i turned 9 i was off the reserve and in a little town in Saskatchewan, My dad wanted to practice so bad that he got his 3 of 4 boys to sit at the drum and help him practice and learn to keep the beat. He has taught me alot within that short practice. I fell in love with the northern Style, Old Style singing and song making. After that i tried hard to impress my pops, He was a little aggitated that i wanted to sing more that dance, in 93 we were at Rocky boy Pow wow and my Mom's Mom passed away on the 2nd day of the pow wow my dad packed up to come home and pay his respects. Soon after that he quit the pow wow scene and concentrated more in the lodges and ceremonies. 2 yrs later he gave up his drum to me and his speaker system to his younger son who was also sitting at the drum of that practice so many yrs. ago. I was 16 yrs old by than and did not know what to do with this drum that i have recieved i knew it was a sacred object that needs to be respected thats why i didnt touch the drum until i knew more about handling the drum and keeping it. At the age of 16 i have become a drum keeper. I was proud to own my own drum and that of my dads drum. I was making songs soon after rocky boy pow wow. I attained a gift after mourning the loss of one of my grandma's of who i was close too. I learnt alot from my uncles Sweetgrass and Blackstone singers that i was confident enough to handle my drum. I practice every day, but did not sing at a pow wow until i was 18 yrs old. Now I sing with both drum groups i love to just sit and sing and enjoy the pow wow atmosphere and making new memories with the guys at the drum. constantly playing paper rock scissors for smutting rights lol..... But anyhow the other part of my story is that i wanted to use my dad's drum name but was sad to hear he gave it to my cousins who live out in ontario. I was sad to hear that i could not make my dad proud but soon hereafter came up with a name that said, "Hey I am the son of my dad and really loves to represent his style of singing and making my family proud...." A Thank You:D

Thumbs up I started to sing out off embarrasedment

In the beginning I was enjoying the powwows just by attending till I got asked by a friend to sing, I didn't know much songs, so I kept just listening and drumming low, after that experience I got the feeling and need of singing, now I can't go to a powwow and just sit there, I feel the need to sing even if I dont get paid, I don't care I love singing. So I started singing northern style now I sing Southern style, it's kind of hard to switch, But if I know the song trust me I will be there to sing with you. Its a great feeling to be asked to sing, I still don't have my own drum group, there are not many singers around this area, at least that I know off, so I sing with All Nations Singers, Spotted Bear, Stronghold and Kaahshun Southern Drum.
