Hey btcsinger. Does your drum have any of the guys who sang with owahuli (sp?) back in the late 80's or early 90's. Couple of those guys have to be dancing Goldern Age by now! j/k

ok, since one of the two drums i sit on is the same as danbear, i have to say that dans other drum firestar knows how to bring it! dan, brackett, firestarjosh, and i have been drumming together for awhile with aracoma and as a group we know how to bring it! but we all have decided to do other powwows aside from aracoma to get out and have fun as ourselves. we all enjoy the atmosphere of powwows and in the we're pretty well known for being able to bring it!

Just as a word of caution....the skinz, and other accomplished singers, here on the boards don't take too well to "self-promoting" singers. If you DO in fact do a good job singing with enthusiasm and all....be humble, be patient and let your singing do the talking.

Shred all doubt instead of causing others to shred you.

Merely a word of caution from your friendly Southern Singing Moderator.

Now....lets get back on task...

I think its pretty evident that everyone has different views on whats considered a full crew....and in the words of Cartman, "lets respect everybody's authortI!"

LSS, I totally agree with you but I don't take to well to somebody who don't know me or my boys dogging on them like that. We are not saying we are perfect by no means, because there ain't nobody on here that doesn't make a mistake every once in awhile. I have full respect for every drummer, singer, or dancer that gets out there and does there thing. I've been to alot of powwows and I've sang with alot of people, and I ain't on here to self-promote. Me and my guys we're just adding to the discussion!

OK, ya'll

I think it has been very well established that a drum of only three or four male singers, with only three or four ladies would probably not cut it at some of the big powwows out west and up north. Most of the drums not in the south, are big drums with a good many singers. That is your standard. In the south, things are a little bit different. Our gahterings down here are smaller, so smaller drums can sound big. It is all a matter of the size of the gahtering and what the visitors are used to. Many of the souther drums in this area (Alabama, Eastern Miss, Georgia, and northern florida) have relatively small drums compared to those in different regions. I don't feel as though it is proper to say that a drum can or cannot "bring it" unless you have heard them. So can we please try to keep this friendly.

As far as this goes, i think that any drum that gets out there and does things the right way and with a good heart, they are bringing all that they need.

brackett,

Well I give you credit. At least you started this post out half-way sincere.....

What if I am used to hearing good northern and southern plains drums? Am I going to be impressed when I hear you/them?

As far as doing things in "the RIGHT WAY with A GOOD HEART,"

does this include stating on a website that is read by people who have been powwowing all their lives, that , "YOU KNOW HOW TO BRING IT with 4 people and sing as good or better than most full sized drums?"

Whatcha' think? I guess none of you listen to LSS?

No, I listen to what he, and you say. And no, bragging about skill or quality is not the right way. But, neither is saying someone can't. I know that the plains drums are on a different level than some of these samller, new drums.

I think the only thing is that those who were bragging were not the only ones at fault. To be honest, their pride was hurt too. Thats all. So, for my friends, I am sorry for the feelings that were hurt. No disrespect was intended, but they are new drums, and maybe some encouragement would be nice. But again, I am sorry for any implied, or percieved disrespect.

I'm not saying they can't, I just invite them to "BRING IT" to the Gathering or Denver March.

If they are as good as they think they are. . .

More Singers gives you:

More volume.....for a longer period of time since you spend more time singin' and less time screamin'.
More songs to sing as everyone can bring their favorites.
More people to tell your lame azz stories to :-)

How many do you need? Who knows? Last week I sang with about 25 this week there will probably be 4 of us. Neither are probably optimal. We have to work too hard as 4, and with a whole bunch, there's just too many to keep track of and it seems that smaller clicks form so we're really not one drum and man it can get very tight. So I'd suggest go out as 4 if you want to (especially to generate some interest), but always be looking for singers 6 and 7 while you're on the powwow trail. At that point, you're probably a lot better drum then you were at 4. (And if you're great at 4, imagine what you'll be like at 6 or 7.)

I'm just sitting here remembering about attending a powwow in Wash. state and sitting between Blackstone and Blacklodge, and Northern Cree across the arena. Went to Denver March in the late 90's. There were 66 drums there.

Not to be rude, but I just don't see 4 guys from Alabama being able to 'Bring it' at one of these powwows. Keep practicing fellas.

Brackett & Wilson,

There is nothing wrong with being excited about what you're doing...that is great. Keep on singing...keep on learning.

To all the more experienced guys out there...my Elders...I hope you all can forgive me for overstepping my bounds at my young age....but, I want you guys to know that there is no need to try to "defend yourselves" and to understand something b/c no one came right out and told me when I first started singing...and I hope my younger guys read this as well. I feel like all great singers....if not everyone... goes through a humbling experience sometime in their lives. This is really a reality check for them to help them to adjust to a good pace for them. For me, I was put in my place...I did not handle things very well. As a result, I think it has made somewhat of a better teacher and better person to be around when at the drum. The back side to that experience has been that I sometimes tend to become submissive around the center drum when there is 3 & 4 drums. Not to say that this is a bad thing...but when you are the one guy with the undiscovered leadership skills on the other end of the row and you're being submissive, it can hurt the drum.

All I'm trying to say is that I am very glad that you and your guys are very interested in singing and want to learn. Heck, if you guys were closer to me I'd probably take you guys in under my wing (if you were interested) and help shape/mold you b/c finding unclaimed singers around these parts are a rarity. I'm pretty sure everyone here on the boards are. However...there are over 500 different tribes here in the US alone....and there are over 1,000 different ways to say "Good Job!" or even "Thank You". And, much in the same way, everyone has their own way of parting knowledge with you.

Just remember, once I asked about and sought after a "Mentor". But one day I woke up and realized the best "Mentor" any young singer can have is that called "EXPERIENCE". AND "EXPERIENCE" can come in different forms, fashions, ages, nations, etc.

So yes, thank you for allowing us to know about you....I'm sure everyone is dying to hear you, just as you all are dying to heard. But, don't forget about the lessons along the journey.

BTW, out here on the East Coast (particularly in the SE), yes you can get away with 3 or 4 as long everyone knows the songs. Just be careful not to get burnt out. Play pick up whenever you can......a lot of lessons to be learned.

LSS

Yea LSS that was extremly well put, btw. I aint nobody but I do know Dan and brackett and all them guys personally, and they actually don't sound TOO bad with the four of them. A little practice and a few more songs and they'll be on their way. Keep it up boys!
