Anthony Monoessy
Alex Smith
Cheevers Toppah
Larry Cozad just to get the list started...

Cant forget Harry Buffalohead, Sterling Big Bear Jr. and Johnson Taylor (sp?). They all left us some great songs.

I like a lot of Lloyd Gwin's and Curtis Hamilton's too.

Just my 49 cents worth!

For the last 20 years, I've been researching my North American Indian heritage and I've purchased lots of movies, books, and music, during that time. I love Robbie Robertson, Walela, Joanne Shenandoah, Red Thunder, Primeaux & Mike, David Carson and many more. The last CD that I've purchased was at Christmas time and it's titled Spirit Connection-Medicine Song Woman by Brenda MacIntyre. She has videos on YouTube. Check her out. She is good.

How bout POWWOW songs, not really concerned with contemporary Native music, although I'm sure these artists have their own talent.

What about The Late Perry Lee Botone Jr.
There were some KILLER songs that come from him. RIP. As well as that Ol' man Leonard Cozad (RIP)

Also The late Ruben (Kahoo) Burgess. There are some KEEN songs that not many people have heard from that guy.

Berky Monoessy- self explanatory

Any more?

Oh yea, I have lots of pow-wow songs. In fact, I purchase a CD from a drum team just about each time I go to a pow-wow.

I have several of Eastern Bull's. I have Red Wolf Singers, I have one from the Halawia Saponi Drum team, I have one on cassette with several Western Drum Teams, and I have one called American Indian Dancers CD. It has the Fancy Dance Song performed by the Cedartree Singers, Butterfly Dance, performed by Twea, Northern Traditional Song perfromed by Cedartree Singers, Hoop Dance Song, Intertribal Song, Woman's Southern Cloth, Sidewinder, and I have pow-wow songs by Ulali. I have over 500 CDs and the ones that I don't play everyday, I have in several containers under my bed.

It makes no difference to me either/or.

What's a drum team? Is it like a drum line?

And, WhoMe, whenever I go to a pow-wow and there is an Indian recording artist, I purchase his or her CD. I have two autographed CDs from Arvel Bird and one from Ed Wind Dancer. I think Ed autographed the one I got from him but it's been about 5 years ago now. Do you want me to fax proof of the autographs to you? If you do, send me your fax number and I'll try to remember to do it on Monday when I go by the office. And I have a CD from Daniel Hicks called First Flight by Black Raven. Daniel sent me the CD through mail. I can prove that too, if you like. Lastly, I have Jamie Coon's new CD that I ordered from Amazon.com but Jamie and I send each other emails sometimes because she is kind enough to respond to her fans, personally. Can prove that too!

You tell me. I'm here to learn. I'm not claiming to know it all. If I used the wrong word or phrase, I'll appreciate you correcting me.

Correction....

The correct "verbage" to use is Drum Group. In this modern day, this is the correct terminology.

Back in the day, there was no "group"...just singers around the Center Drum. This is why you don't find "drum groups" with "ancient" recordings. What you'll find are a list of singers; men and women.

You mentioned "Haliwa Drum Team"...who are you talking about? I'm Haliwa and I don't know of any southern group with a recording out. And no one outside of our circle has any of our songs.

Could you be talking about Stoney Creek? A northern drum!

Could you have planted a bug at our practices and recorded us?

Yeah, it's on the inside of the double head :) Better take it apart to find it...jk

I usually just refer to it as "the Drum" meaning the actual drum and the singers who man it. guess there are other ways too. "Drum team" is not a standard reference but what the heck, it's English, a very peculiar language!

I greatly respect Yellowfish, Cozad, and the Anquoes for their contributions.

Thanks for the correction. I know the term drum group but I couldn't think of it when I said drum team. I've been attending your pow-wow each year for over 17 years. I remember when Archie taught courses at Martin Community College and the Haliwa Tribe gave a pow-wow at Martin Community College. Yep, I'm talking about Stoney Creek. I couldn't remeber the name. Are you serious about me planting a bug at your practices? Have you seen Ms. Rose Sliver lately? Is she still alive? I can't remember the name of that little road that she lives on. She is a wounderful and sweet lady. I went to visit her about one and a half years ago. I live only about 60 miles east of Hollister. However, I was in Halifax County about a month ago. I was at the Scotland Neck library. Yep, I love Stoney Creek. I also love Eastern Bull. Have you seen Joey and the group lately. I remember about 10 years ago, I took my son to Meadoc Mountain Park and he played softball with some the youngsters there in Hollister and we had a great time! It's wonderful to meet someone esle that lives in Eastern, North Carolina. And how could you say that you don't know of any southern groups with a recording out. Did you forget Eastern Bull Singers? They have several recordings out. I have two of them. John Blackfeather was the MC at both of the recordings that I have. Shame on you! I hope no one from Eastern Bull reads your post!
