Will keep an eye out for these drums you have mentioned... but surely there has to be some more up and coming groups out there.

It sucks that the northern guys get all the publicity and southern gets ignored mostly outside of a few groups here and there. This thread is a way of spreading the word about some groups that normally wouldn't get any publicity at all. I love southern drums and southern songs... as a way of sweetening the pot... I will give 50,000 pts to the person that posts the 50th name of an up and coming Southern group (maybe more?)

Here are the names we have so far:
1. White Hawk
2. Thunder Hill
3. Wyld Band of Commanches
4. Black Bear Creek
5. Southern Sun
6. Waterbird (or is it Southern Waterbird?)

I know there are some other good groups out there, give them their props! only 44 more to go!

So who are the other up and coming southern groups out there? We're still at 13...
This is a way of spreading the word and getting names out there of some other southern singers... lord knows you don't see as many southern groups getting the exposure that northern groups do... shout em out!

What happened to Bad Moon Rising? I saw them set up recently under the name Ponca Crossing (perhaps named after where sunnyside crosses the east roads *L)

How 'bout Southern Xtreme? Anybody heard them? I heard they were host drum at the Santa Fe Indian Market powwow.

And what about Bear Claw out of Dallas? I heard them sing. They are pretty good and planning on going to Germany on a cultural exchange soon!

Ok maybe we should just make a list of the drums everyone has heard of and shout out other drums that belong on the list that aren't as well known.

Here are the drums everyone should know (in no particular order):
1. Yellowhammer
2. Young Bird
3. Zotigh
4. Cozad
5. Sizzortail
6. Yellow Jacket
7. Omaha White Tail
8. Southern Boyz
9. Poor Boys
10. Rose Hill
11. Cedartree
12. Otter Trail
13. Southern Outlaws
14. 12 Gauge
15. Southern Thunder
16. Bad Medicine

I know southern "groups" are a fairly new innovation, and forgive me if I left anyone out on the list above, but they are the most well known, maybe we should change the emphasis to the best southern groups most people never hear of outside of their home areas.

Thanks WhoMe for the additions and I have a few more myself. I've heard the Plainsmen were a pretty jammin group and are still around, also what about the Ft. Oakland Ramblers? (I've heard OF them and pretty sure the name is correct, but never heard them myself,) Also I've heard of a drum that's been around out east called Silver Cloud that I hear is pretty good (will see them for the first time in a few weeks, have heard a few tracks and look forward to it), and I have always been a fan of Ron Gibson's groups (under whatever name he uses that weekend depending on who he's singing with,) but I'll list them as Good Heart for now since that's what I've seen them as most up here in the midwest. I also like Rick Bird's boys Birdchopper, we see them up here quite a bit and they're pretty good, and really good guys as well. If there are some other really good groups in your area that aren't on the list above, shoot them out...

So the list now stands as:
1.White Hawk
2.Thunder Hill
3.Wyld Band of Comanches
4.Black Bear Creek
5.Southern Sun
6.Waterbird
7.Bad Water
8.Southern Eagle
9.Those Guys
10.Southern Xtreme
11.Black Bear
12.Medicine Dog
13.Comanche Eagle
14. Bad Moon Rising
15. Bear Claw
16. The Plainsmen
17. Ft. Oakland Ramblers
18. Silver Cloud
19. Good Heart
20. Birdchopper

Ok, that's 20, 30 more to go, and I'll up the antee for the 50th posted drum to 250,000 points. I'm just trying to help get the word out on some drums most of us never hear of, also, if any groups have any cd's for sale and are pretty good... hey free advertising never hurts! (like after all this talk of Thunder Hill I'm looking to buying their CD that Canyon put out [CR-6411] called "Clash of the Titans") So far between both lists we have 36 drums listed that people can check out... how many of us can name at least 50+ Northern Drums of the top of our heads... but when we are asked about Southern groups can't think of more than a 15-20?

What can I say, I love southern and want to hear more groups getting their songs out there!

Chebon,

Thanks kewl. I saw were the Foye's were singing with Black Bear from Washington, DC recently.

Red Shield,

Silver Cloud and Ft. Oakland Ramblers have been around for awhile.

Ft. Oakland (led by Don Patterson) were one of the host drums at Red Earth this year! Don was also the head singer at this years Tulsa Powwow. I like singing with him.

I heard the lead singer for Black Bear moved to NY. I wonder if he will start singing with Silver Cloud now?

i heard them at Crow Fair pow-wow this past weekend.

medicine whistle is the first time i heard of them and they sounded ahright.

and as for Spotted Horse. i heard them a few times at diferent pow-wows the past few years. they sounded ahright.

they announced where they were from but i wasn't paying attention. all the pretty native ladies had most of my attention.

Like I said WhoMe, I made the list I made of the "known" southern groups didn't have them on it, but I've seen both of them have been around for a while, but so has Good Heart and Birdchopper as well... but they make the new list of "best drums you may never have heard of but should check-out list" ... lol

By the way, thanks for all the mention of Thunderhill you guys... ordered the cd last night!... LOL

Ok the list now stands as:
1.White Hawk
2.Thunder Hill
3.Wyld Band of Comanches
4.Black Bear Creek
5.Southern Sun
6.Waterbird
7.Bad Water
8.Southern Eagle
9.Those Guys
10.Southern Xtreme
11.Black Bear
12.Medicine Dog
13.Comanche Eagle
14. Bad Moon Rising
15. Bear Claw
16. The Plainsmen
17. Ft. Oakland Ramblers
18. Silver Cloud
19. Good Heart
20. Birdchopper
21. Moccasin Trail
22. Medicine Whistle
23. Spotted Horse

27 more to go...
