Dang...that's a lot of groups...this thread started out as who's up and coming, and now its "how many southern drums can we name" LOL

I'd say if a drum has been around for four years or more and hasn't "made it" then they probably will never break into the big time. There's nothing wrong with that and singing at local or community pow wows is admirable, but that's not the purpose of this thread.

I haven't heard any "up and coming drums" so far this season. I've heard several established drums like Youngbird and Cozad and a few more that will never make it. None that I thought would make it though.

Singerd,

As far as up and coming, Thunderhill are rising the fastest. Those of you who attended Schemitzun this year, probably heard their music.

I was looking at the drum list. A lot of the drums have interchangable singers and sing with different drums, listed.

Some of the southern drums on the list have only set up a few times.

I would like to hear some of the Montana and Canadian southern drums. Hmmmm?

I heard a Wyoming southern drum. Not bad*

No, I guess I never did say... so the debt has been paid... lol.

Am glad I started the thread though... got the chance to hear about some other groups from other areas that I wouldn't have heard of otherwise... as a matter of fact... I'm sitting here jamming to the Thunderhill CD right now... I gotta say it... those of you who recommended them... they're awesome!

Hey WhoMe... I've noticed there seems to be a stronger bond between southern singers than northern in my opinion, around here, the four big southern drums we see in the state are White Hawk, Thunder Nation, Red Bird and us (Red Shield.) Although I see a few northern singers sitting in with other northern drums, it seems more common for our members to sing with other drums when we're not singing, or even when we're at the same pow wow if we know the songs... maybe it's getting back to the whole center drum mentality... I dunno. It'd be cool to bring all three of the Ohio drums (Thunder Nation, Red Bird and Red Shield) together as a center drum for a pow wow or two and just name a head singer for the pow wow... I know there's also been talk of putting the leads and stronger singers from all three to compete at OSU next year... I'm just glad to see southern singing making a pretty big impact up here.

RedS,

That may be true.

The difference is the center drum.

If you are a southern singer, you can always sit at the center drum unless it is a "closed drum." A closed center drum means that only the invited singers of the head singers are allowed to sit in.

Otherwise you can have southern singers from Cali, AZ, NM, TX, OK, CO, NB, and FL who have never met or sang with each other - all sitting at a center drum.

Yeah, I know... been toying with the idea of actually hiring a head singer for our new year's pow wow (if it happens) and getting a center drum going in addition to hiring in a few northern drums... still kinda up in the air on that one though.

A. I don't know what they'd do with a true southern style drum... no one does center drum up here in Ohio.

B. If I were to do it, I'd have a drum in the center and northern drums on the side... again, not sure how people'd react to that one.

Just some ideas... need to get things arranged for the space and funding first.

RedS,

It's too bad that the MegaPowwows are inviting Southern Host Drums to host their powwows instead of a head singer. Yes, head singers are still invited to some powwows but, this is declining.

The era of head singers is declining in favor of southern drum groups as,

"The powwow evolution marches on."

Having sit in with both Redshield, and Thunder Nation,I'd say there be a Drum to be reconded with, I enjoy both of those drums, and would be more than glad to see this come about.

Thumbs up

This list seems long..........most of these Drums are already established....White Hawk ( Sterling BigBear) for example has been around for quite a while....so have some of the others on this list. All good Drums !! We have a couple from my area that rock....have you heard "Niwiwan" or " 5 Clan" . Both are from Wisconsin.

Gotta agree with you on White Hawk. I did some recording work with the drum a few years ago. Sterling is also very perticular on how the songs go. There can't be a word out of place or a word mispronounced any where in the songs. I admire him very much for making sure the songs are correct in every way. Streling does it right
