bustle lacing

just wondering what some people use for secondary lacing on traditional bustles ?

I've seen artificial sinew used...if I'm correct on what you mean by secondary lacing.

Even artificial sinew breaks down toooooo darn fast. I have used "Spider Wire" fishing line that is made with Kevlar, the stuff that makes bullet proof vests. It will take years to even wear down, by then the bustle may have been passed over to someone else or long since changed. I use the 40 pound test cloth spider wire that is about as thick as a 10 pound monofilament fishing line, but I can garrantee that you will not break it between both of your hands,, when you try to pull that and break it,, the only thing you will do is to cut your own skin!
I use it for chokers now too as they tend to split with sinews as well.

I built my bustle about 33 years ago and used artificial sinew through the quills , braided it and brain tan deerskin for the ties and has been about 6-7 years since I had to restring it. I have no complaints about the artificial sinew !
Of course , a person has to take care of his gear !

If you use artificial sinew, braiding it is the key to making it last. I've used the Spider Wire fishing line and haven't had any cusomer complaints yet. They're both good options.
