Before you do any repair work, take pictures of the damage. Also keep your luggage claim tag, and ticket receipts.

TSA claim office:

http://www.tsa.gov/public/interapp/e...orial_1028.xml

It is a humongous pain in the posterior, but you can request a private luggage screening. Now, you probably have to arrive at the airport a week in advance of your flight. They are supposed to have procedures in place to handle ceremonial items. Needless to say, have your feather permits with you.

TSA procedeures for travelers with ceremonial, cultural, and religious items:

http://www.tsa.gov/public/interapp/e...orial_1037.xml

I figure the next advance in air travel safety and "comfort" will be anesthetic gas, which will be pumped in as soon as the plane pushes away from the gate and turned off after the ground crew has tossed your luggage out of the plane on to the tarmac.

As for the feather damage, steam is good for unrumpling the webbing. However, this may be inadvisable because of glue or sealants used on your fan.

Let me point out this thread to Powwowbum.. he might have even more suggestions for you... you got a pic of how mangled they are? Sometimes it's easier to see what can be done if we can see what we've got to work with.

although it's good to have your feather permits at all times, it will not be needed at the TSA checkpoint. They have don't the authority to take your feathers. The fish and wildlife have the permits and license to take it away, them and only them. They don't have FaW officers at airports.

Without seeing the damage it is very difficult to tell you what can be done to repair it.

Bent quill can be straighten pretty easy. You can even repair broken quills, but it is a real pain and would probably require take the fan apart.

As was said before webbing can be straighten using the aid of steam from a tea kettle of a steam iron.

We would really need more info to help better.

Its hard flying with feathers but the best solution I have found is to carry on all your feathers. Im a traditional dancer....so i had my bustle, fan, dance stick, roach pin and roach feathers and so on to look after. What I did was packed them in a paper sack. The feathers were sticking out the top of the bag, but it fit through the x ray and fit in the over head compartments. One flight attendant asked me if the Eagle was still alive.....I was speechless lolol. hopes this helps.

Sorry I can't help but, I'm sincelry sorry for your expiriance. but in light of this happing I have thought about making tags for the perpose of explaining to people that that is a sacred item & reserves respect from the people handling it. Just as a religious item for any other person, ie: a Torra cloth , a Muslem kneeling cloth case , or a personal bible case. what ever the case my be there should be respect no matter what & hopefully making tags to remind people how important an item is would be a good idea. what do you think?

Live and learn, never check your regalia items in if they are that important to you. Either carry on or mail them FedEx. I would take the fan apart, to get them fixed properly. If your the maker of the fan, it would be simple as that.
