I haven't searched online but I've seen spools of chainette for $10.

Wow, $10 bucks a spool is a great deal. I'm finding them about $17 online.

Chainette comes in two forms- on spools or in lengths already cut (sold by the yard). For shawls, the spool is more economical but if you want some accent colors, you could get those by the yard.

For the spooled stuff, you have to wind it off around something which is double the length you want the fringe to be. After you wind, cut at one end and your fringes are good to go. The cut lengths of fringe are ready as they are. Just pull each fringe off from the bunch.

Hem your shawl. Then to attach the fringe, poke a hole in the hem with an awl. Thread two fringes through a yarn needle or large tapestry needle and thread it through your awl hole. Remove needle. Bring the four fringe ends together so they are even. Tie them together with an overhand knot close to the edge of your fabric. You need to use two fringes in each hole to get the right fullness. Also, space your holes fairly close to each other for best effect, 1/4 inch is common. Once all fringes are done, apply a dab of Fray-Check to the ends of all the fringes to prevent them from fraying and unravelling.

If you want to get extra fancy, you can net the fringe by tying a second or third row of knots with the fringes. I have also seen large beads knotted on with this technique also. The netting work gives the shawl a nice swing since all the fringes are connected rather than hanging individually.

Yep, I saw the $10 spools at a powwow and promptly bought them up!

My friend who has tied many shawls pins her shawls so the edge is hanging off an ironing board.

Instead of cutting pieces off the spool, just pull off a length (about 30" to get traditional 14" fringe), fold the chainette at that 30" mark and thread it thru the eye of a sharp pointed tapestry needle. Push it thru the hem on the shawl about 1/4" from the edge.

Pull some more length off the spool and thread your needle, pushing it thru the fabric a finger width away. "Sew"all the fringe on one side, then go back and snip the chainette between each bundle of doubled fringe. Tie each bundle in the overhand knot, then go back and trim them up.

This way you can tie a shawl in half the time.

Thanks for the replies Ladies. So far, the cheapest Ive found the spools for is through Crazy Crow - Noc Bay is like a couple bucks more, and I checked a few other places too. Ill keep checking around as I go, and will keep my eyes open at the powwows. Would be nice to find em for $10 a spool. Thanks again!

Might try checking crazycrow and nocbay, both have websites. Could also check JoAnns if you have one locally. Just tossing out some ideas
