Do dream catchers have different meanings?

I have bought a bunch of dream catchers online and 1 looks alot different than the others or any I have seen before. It has a star in the center and all points on the star touch the circle. At each point is a small feather. There are 6 beads in the center of the star. Than it has 3 feathers hanging. 1 matches all pictures I could find of a hawk feather, 1 is black or dark brown with white or light gray spots and the other feather is brown and black. They are not painted feathers. Are some dream catchers made with different meanings or significance? I was told that depending on decoration and what is used to make it that it could have some other kind of spiritual meaning. Thanks to all who can help me with info.

Curious, I can't give you an answer either, just a link. There are discriptions and pictures. Can't tell whether it's good info or not. Hm....

Native American Dreamcatchers
After reading the link, seems plausable i know i did not start seeing them till the 70's so what was described in the article sounds about right

From reading this and what i have seen around I think the maker of the Dream catcher puts there on spin on what it means to them
But I dont think you can find a book that would classify them in any order so that this kind means this and this kind over here means that... And if you read the first part of the article they said the original tribe making them made them rather small and somewhat plain with just senew and a feather hanging off them...

Thank you Josiah, it sounded good to me, but I didn't know for sure whether it was o.k., so....thank you for your opinion. And whenever I post something and you think I'm wrong, please everybody feel free to correct me. I will not post much about those things anyway.... Thank you!!!!

My 8-year-old wanted a dreamcatcher for Christmas after reading a book about them as they were used in the old Anishnabe traditions. My sister sent her one that was made by a Dine lady in Arizona, whose name and roll number were on the tag attached to the dreamcatcher.

It is just like the description in your link, Margy - between 3 to 4 inches in diameter, wrapped with leather around the frame, a single bead strung through the webbing in one part and then a few strips of leather hanging from the bottom with a few pony beads and tiny feathers attached. She has it hanging over her bed, and she continues to tell me that she hasn't had a nightmare since she hung it up!

The article is correct.

I was raised 'Nish, and was taught the proper and traditional way of making dream catchers, and how to do it with proper respect, and in what contexts it should be used.

I cringe, CRINGE, when I see dream catchers everywhere. I know they're not being used appropriately, I know the people who make them don't know the stories involved.

But I'd never say anything, except here.

Pr,

Boy do you have that right. I was in Peru in September. The Quechua (ancestors of the Inca) now make dream catchers for sale to tourists and sell them in their outdoor markets.

Money rules and Anishinabe culture is now for sale below the equator!

And that's why I don't buy dream catchers. Too many neon green 'Made in China" ones out there. I know I'd hate to see any of my nation's craft being co-opted by everyone.

But on the other hand, if your child was having bad dreams, and you took some tobacco to an Anishinabe elder or Midewiwin lodge member and they made you a dreamcatcher, that would be perfectly cool with me.

But does a Nish dreamcatcher's medicine work with let's say an Apache, or a Ponca?

If it was offered to me by someone of trust of course I'd accept it. I have friends from all different tribes, and I've received many cultural items from them (and given them items as well). If I was having bad dreams and one of my Anishnaabe friends gave me a dreamcatcher I'd use it. I believe it will work because it was offered with good intentions.

Yes, it is true that dream catchers have a different meanings. The symbols have short spells on them to keep bad dreams away.then some tell a story about long ago. When your dream for someone you loved and you just never want to forget it or you never wanted to dream about some else that is not like the good dream. then it will bring then back.but they do not always work.
