Or maybe I'm just a weird white lady with WAAAY too much free time on her hands! Ha!

Yeah, fly tying class is a great way for women to meet men. That is if you don't mind them middle-aged+ and/or married!
LOL!

OK,time for another question. Many of the florettes that I've got are really curved...what is a good way to try to straighten them a little? The quill is quite delicate,I know about using an iron or lightbulb for larger feathers but these look like they might not tolerate that. Thanks

Hi Medic,

When I use those florets, I always just use the very tip of the feather, say the first 1" or so and not any more. Even if they are a little curved you don't have to worry about it because when you roll the feathers, the curve goes away. If you need to straighten them, try steaming them over a tea kettle. Since you are using less width of the feather, you will usually have to layer one on the back and one on the front. Be careful though becaue it'll get bulky if you aren't careful.

As for the threadwork info that I promised earlier, I'm still working on that. I was trying to get good results by drawing it out on the computer but it looks like I will have to draw out something by hand instead and scan it in. It's easier to see it than it is to describe it.

Hope it helps in some way.

WNZ

Finally

Hey Folks,

They finally fixed our scanner here so I am attaching a picture of each of the three kinds of feathers we are talking about here. From left to right they are: florets, t-base and hackles. Each are used in fan making but it seems their uses are limited to their characteristics. Florets are very supple and can be rolled around objects like the pics I posted earlier. The t-base feathers, even though they look similar to florets are much less flexible and are usually place near the base of feathers but not rolled around them. Hackles are generally used in a similar way to t-base but are much more versatile due to their narrowness.

Anyway, I hope this clears things up a little.

Despues luego,

WNZ

Can you take a picture to show how these can be used on a feather and to show the different ways you should use each.

Thanks

Their really aren't any "Rules" to this stuff per se. Generally, the craftsperson just kinda does whatever looks the best to him. Since some materials are better suited to certain types of decoration than others, you can use them that way but there is also no reason that you can't substitute one for the other if the particular appication allows it.

Anyway, I'll try to put something together just for an example but careful what you ask for webmaster, you might just get it in the mail.... ;-)
