Question Getting a feather fan over the border (Canada to US)

Hi all,

I don't post here much but I have a question.. I am originally from Ontario Canada and now live in the US (California). My fan for my regalia is still in Ontario (my sister has it) because when I was moving things were packed pretty tight and I didn't want it to get damaged.

I would like to know if we are likely to experience any problems with customs if she mails my fan to me. Ideally I would prefer it to be transported personally, however, we're all broke and a visit isn't likely in the near future. But I would rather wait than risk it being confiscated or something.. does anyone know the legalities involved in this, are we likely to have problems? It's just a goose wing fan but I know laws are stricter in the US regarding feathers etc and I'm not sure what is and isn't and google hasn't yielded many answers for me. I know if I was bringing it over personally I could show my card but if it's going through the mail in customs without me....?

If the goose feathers are Aleutian, or Hawiian sub-species, they are prohibited.

Aurgh... Well it looks like in order to prove it isn't Canadian goose (assuming it isn't - I don't know, I've had the fan for more than 15 years and I was simply told it was goose when it was given to me, not the type) - I may have to see if I can find an expert who could certify and document it's type before I would risk shipping it. Gah, this is frustrating. My fan is very meaningful to me and I don't like the idea that I may have to replace it or risk losing it entirely :(

U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) has a Native American Liaison Program, you will have to make a few phone calls until you find the right officer.

@Doll, good luck with getting back together with your fan. As you can tell @AmigoKumeyaay is a good source of informaion regarding U.S. Customs & Border Protection. And @windanccer will "like" all updates to this thread until all is well!

Thanks so much for all the info! It was very helpful. Unfortunately nothing has panned out in a way that I would be confident sending it through the mail service - the thought of someone not knowing what they're doing at Customs is just too great... since it's just in a package and with no physical person to advocate for it, if there is question, there are no guarantees. But I talked to my sister and she is going to drive my fan over the border herself and then mail it to me domestically. That way if there is any question she can show her card. We also have determined with 99% certainty that it's just a regular run of the mill, non-protected brown goose wing through a feather identification website.

Thanks again, I feel better!! If I had not been able to keep it I know my sister would make it a lovely new home, but I feel much better knowing chances are good it can be with me again :)
