moccasins

Anyone know how to make comfortable easy to put together moccasins? I noticed some dancers look like they have a hide of soft brown leather as a sole. I use strap leather cuz it lasts but its hard to dance in, and white laitgo wears down right away..and the strap leather can be slippery depending on what floor ur dancing on, help!

I like to use commercial tanned buckskin as the sole, and even making a double layer with Wonder Under between.

It's easy-peasy to sew, too!

For hard sole mocs, I like to use buffalo rawhide. Lasts a long time and wears like iron. I have mocs made in 1991 which are still in great shape. Once in a rare while it can be a little slipperly on wet grass. All my mocs have cushioned insoles inserted in them for extra comfort.

Czechy, do you get your buffalo rawhide already conditioned for soles, or is it just raw? If so, what do you do to get it ready for soles?

I have used rawhide with some of the hair still on and with the hair removed. I don't condition the rawhide. It gets soaked overnight in water and then dried flat to shrink before I cut out the sole pieces. The soles are fairly stiff but over time they become a bit more flexible. I have heard of some folks rubbing Neat's foot oil into the rawhide but I have never tried that.

I want something comfortable and easy to sew. The buffalo hide sounds like the cowhide apaches use for moccasins. And they're very hard, can't even bend the arch of the foot comfortably. To condition cowhide and to get rid of the smell it has to be buried for months. But yea I'm lookin for something easy to move in. Good for a mens fancy dancer

The commercial buckskin is easy (fairly) to sew and wears better than regular buckskin.

If you iron some wonderunder to one piece of buckskin, pull the paper and iron on another piece. Sew it on the moc top with a welt, and they're GUARANTEED to last all powwow season, or YEARS for the occasional dancer.

Well if you want to sew the soles on by sewing machine that would be the easiest thing. You would need to use a leather needle, heavy thread and commercial leather that the needle will puncture without trouble. You can always add an extra sole piece to the bottom by gluing it on or using the method wyo_rose mentioned.

The buffalo rawhide is fairly easy to sew by hand if you wet it first. I dance jingle in my buffalo soled mocs and have no problem with foot flexibility. Gel or chushiony insoles are a must though. The rawhide that the Apaches use is extremely thick. More common rawhide soles are around 1/8" thick.

Just to clarify: I'm talking commercial tanned BUCKSKIN and not leather.

And I just use a size 10 or 12 sharp needle to sew EVERYTHING, cuz I want to make things that are easy to construct as well.

The only thing good to bead on is Braintanned Buckskin.

If you have to make uppers out of something different: commercial tanned buckskin, canvas, other cloth, other leather, then I would bead on something else and attach it to the upper later.

i have only made a few pairs of these, when requested. This is my method. Use a pattern for two piece Plains style mocs. You will need to add maybe 1/4" around both the upper and sole for seam allowance, possibly more as fabric does not stretch like leather does. For the upper I bond the top fabric to a piece of heavy duck cloth or canvas. Heat n Bond LITE works well. The upper pattern is traced onto it and cut out. The edges are bound with 1/2" wide double fold bias tape. Some 1/4" bias tape can be used to bind the edges of the foot opening and the tops of the sides. Next, do your applique work on the uppers.

For the soles, I use a piece of Native tanned smoked moose hide but you can use anything that your sewing machine can handle. For soft leather soles use a leather needle in your machine and not a normal ballpoint needle. A heavier thread like hand quilting thread seems to work fine both on top and in the bobbin. Starting at the toe, sew a wide zigzag stitch attaching the upper to the sole. Sew inside out. Sew down the other side. Cut off excess fabric at the heel and sew heel seam. Turn inside out. Attach tongues and ties.

Not too different from making the buckskin mocs but fit can be a bit tricky. Best to trial with cheap scrap fabric until you get the right size and shape for the sole and upper.

I've seen kids mocs made by making the uppers made out of cloth, heat bonded to baby lap pad and sew on a machine to latigo soles. Looked pretty good.

I bought some thread at a fabric store recently to sew nylon webbing for a boat cover. Couldn't break it. Bet that would work good. Sews easy, doesn't break.

Yes, and there's some kinds of latigo that are thicker and harder to sew, and some that are thinner and just right for soles.
