paper mache instructions needed

ok, so I want to make a mask with a layer of book pages in the form of paper mache, I've done it before and it was successful but it was only one layer of pages on thick paper (230g). this time as I don't have the particular book I will print some and I wanted to know given that the base will be the same if the first layer(s) is a newspaper, will it show through the final layer (regular printing paper)

Paper-mâché. This is a first for the powwow crafts forum and a flashback to my undergrad work-study job as a studio aid for the elementary art-ed class. Between that and too many elementary school teachers in the family, I learned more about paper-mâché than I ever wanted, LOL.

I assume since this a mask you're using a more moisture resistant adhesive than flour and water paste. When we made Mardi Gras masks as one of the class projects, we used PVA glue thinned with water. Either will bleed the ink from the newsprint, with the flour and water being slightly worse.

You might also consider using paper grocery bags instead of news paper. They would be dark under your printed layer but wouldn't have printing and ink to bleed through. U-Haul also sells boxes of unprinted newsprint for wrapping dishes. It's clean and off-white.

But if you're going to use the newspapers, here's what I would try: Once I had the structural layers done, I'd let it dry completely. Then I'd add a layer of plain white printer paper. Or you could paint it inside and outside with a thin layer of gesso or white acrylic paint. Flour paste will not stick well to the paint, so you need to be using PVA glue for this to work. And if you're too heavy handed with the paint, the next layer could delaminate under wear.

Just for future projects: You can get really pretty layers of transparent colors using colored tissue paper stuck down with clear acrylic gel media. There is also a product called Cellu-Clay that is ground paper and adhesive, you just add water. There is also plaster cloth, which you can get at craft stores. It makes strong mask bases. Don't shape it over skin tho'. Plaster can generate a lot of heat when it sets and it can burn; it will also stick.
