Unhappy Preserving feathers

Help! Something appears to be eating my owl feather :( After I found the feather I washed it with soap and then alternately passed it through it steam and froze it according to directions I found online. It was supposed to have killed mites and such, but after a few months the tip and edges of the feather are starting to get ragged like it is being eaten by something. Do any of you have suggestions as to what I can do to keep it from being completely destroyed?

Thanks!

Maybe the feather didn't want to be cleaned with soap & water When was the last time you saw an owl showering? Maybe the owl wants their feather back

Owl feathers have a combed edge naturally, almost as if something was eating the feather. You sure it's an owl feather? I've heard borax is a safe way of killing mites in feathers... put it in a box with enough borax powder to cover the feather and leave sit for some time.

Okay... so the picture didn't post, but you can find it online.

It is definitely an owl feather, left under a tree by my window which a male barred owl visits regularly.... I'll try borax, thanks

The owl wouldn't have left it under my window for me if he had wanted it back

I don't know if you can salvage it or not at this point. Living in the woods,(and we used to raise pheasants), all I've ever done to clean them is stick them in the microwave, (in a plastic container)with a wet paper towel, and steam them on high for a couple of minutes. Left them in the container until it cooled. Never had any bug problems.

That's a good thing to point out. The leading edge of an owl feather is like that to help it fly silently.
