The Quilting Portion of Making a Star Quilt

To the Star Quilters out there-

Opinions on the quilting portion of the show? Which method do you use? Anybody do it on a regular sewing machine with any manner of results that don't result in accidentally attaching one half to the other half?

I know some people have access to one of those big machine quilters, which I don't.... but to those who do, what did you do before you used the big machine?

You pin up your layers and stretch it on a frame. Then you quilt by hand.

I can piece tops, left right up and down, but I can't quilt.

Lol my grandma (she was one of my grandmas anyway) could churn out a good quilt in a week with her treadle sewing machine for piecing and then quilting by hand...

Unfortunately, I can't ask her :(

But she made me one that was my kid blanket, so I learned how she pieced fabric because of how much time I spent with it, but I didn't crack the secret to her quilting.I get the basics of hand quilting, but her stitches were perfect from years upon years of experience, and here I am in my 30's just starting out.

*sigh* the old ones never stay around long enough. I could go for some of her pie now.

I safety pin it and sew it on a regular machine, usually following the seams, and doing a few lines in the open areas.

Roll up one side, put it under the arm of the sewing machine, and go straight across the middle (in the star). Then unroll, roll it up the other way and go straight across the opposite way making a cross, then do the opposite cross, then do the whole outside of the star, then you can sew within the star, either lines, or small diamonds inside the big diamonds.
Then do lines or diamonds (traced on) in the open areas. After it's all done, then trim and do the binding.

Of course , it's easier on smaller quilts, but I've done it on a King size. After it's safety pinned, with about 100-200 pins, grab all three layers with both hands, and slightly pull the quilt through while sewing.

Good luck!!

Dang girl! Doing a king on a regular sewing machine is a wrestling match and a half.

Do you use those bent quilting safety pins?

Wow, OLC, that is beautiful!!

I tried the bent safety pins once, they're no better than regular ones...HOWEVER, you have to get GOOD sewing safety pins. Most safety pins have a rough "pin" and are kinda flimsy for these purposes.

And yes, after doing a king size, it was "NEVER AGAIN" and I hand quilted the next king size. :)

I should mention that I could never get a big frame, so I basted and used a big hoop to hand quilt...about 24" diameter.

I'm kinda sad ! My mom bought one of those big quilting machines. It had different patterns you could sew or you could freehand. She made quilts for several years. Then she got into something else and then decided to move to an apartment. She told me if we'd use it we could have it and I didn't have anyplace to set it up , so I told her she'd be better off to sell it ! LOL Hindsight sucks bad !!!LOL She made and sold a ton of quilts though !

I saw her in action once and she set up and quilted 5 quilts in just a few minutes ! Maybe 5-6 minutes per quilt. It took longer to set up everything than it did to do the actual quilting !

WOW!! All my cousins in Alaska that quilt have the big quilting machines. And even traded up to nicer ones!! I'm kinda jealous! Wish I could get one for my daughter that quilts. She even sends out her baby quilts to be machine quilted, so she's making zero profit on her quilts really.

Those machines are the bombdiggity!!
