Selling Online.....

Hi,
I have never sold anything online. I was wondering if those of you here that do, would have any pointers or advice for someone starting out. If there is already a thread with any of this info on it that would be helpful as well.

Thank you in advance.

Thank you Itzhecatl for your response.

Well for right now it would be mostly my beadwork. What I guess I am asking is how to protect yourself from getting ripped off. Or how do you go about packing an shipping. The simple things to most lol but not me. My fear is to send it off and never see a dime or the beadwork again. Thank you again.

Get a paypal account and all your payments through them - make sure you are paid in full prior to shipping.

Make sure thatall your shipping has a tracking number and you pay for the isurance (US Post is good for that). Always confirm te shipping costs prior to you accepting the final payment.

Make sure you are covered for local state and federal tax liability and get yourself a tax number so you can collect the taxes.

Make sure you are on the right side of the Indian Arts and Craft Act. Wouldn't want to see you getting fined because of some rabid folks around.

Thank you yaahl !

Thank you yaahl. I really do appreciate your help. I think I need to find out some more about the insurance and tax number stuff but other than that everything else is good.

So with this bit of information I think I may try my hand at it soon.

Thank you again!!!!

Selling online is hard, and you need to invest a good deal of time to be successful. You need to learn how to photograph your work to show it to the best advantage. You need to learn how to write good descriptions for SEO (search engine optimization)and to describe your product. A friend of mine says "photograph your work so you don't need to describe it and write your descriptions so you don't need photos". You need to price your product so you are making a decent wage. I price my work by the piece. Necklaces similar to my avatar are priced at $60-plus shipping cost. Take your packing cost into account when either pricing your product or figuring your shipping cost. Be prepared for people to try and scam you. It will happen. If somebody wants to send you an extra $100 for shipping and you send them the difference, or they want to have "an agent" pick the item up-hit the delete button. I see so many people on the site I sell on, think that all they have to do is set up a shop, list things and sales will happen magically. It doesn't work that way. You have to market your work and drive sales and traffic to your shop. It takes time-a good bit of time if you want to be successful.

Thank you subeeds!

Thank you subeeds!!!!!!!!
Funny you should mention this...SEO (search engine optimization). It reminds me of a time when my mother got an invitation somehow (probably something she signed up for online) for a free web seminar at a local hotel. Of course you know what I'm getting at don't you... Yes, she drug me with her on this adventure to learn stuff that I just knew I would never ever use. lol Anyway, I remember them talking about specific words (key words) for a search engine to pick it up and put it at the top of the search. Would this be the same thing you are speaking of?

If so, funny how things you really don't want to do somehow come back to help you. Thanks Mom!

If not, ole well I knew I didn't want to waist my afternoon like that. Still love ya Mom!

I will have a hard time with descriptions. Because I am so use to giving everything away I do not know how to push the product. Probably the pictures too, because of my crappy camera. I will definantely work on those.

Oh wow, wasn't sure how they would go about trying to scam but was thinking about how to keep myself out of those. So Thank You for showing me this is how they will do it. This way I know ahead what to look out for. I really do appreciate that.

Yeah I can understand what you are talking about snapping your fingers and tada! I don't expect that at all. I had a few pieces I recently finished and wanted to see if I could sell them. But then I began to realize I don't know anything about this. Not to say on down the line I wouldn't transition into a website or something more like that. But for right now that has alot of like you say research and work to get everything set up.

Thank you again for everything

Exactly what I'm talking about. You also have to be careful about duplicating too many key words or Google won't like it. Google is constantly changing how they like things and it can be a huge task keeping up with them LOL!

Another scam is people contacting you saying they will promote you on their YouTube channel or their blog IF you send them something for free.
