Question Shell Shakers for Stomp Dance???

Would anyone on the list know of someone who makes the shakers for stomp dancing? I am needing a new set. I am interested in either the cans or the turtle shell (prefered though) Can anyone give an assist?

Thank you for you time and effort.

Excues me for saying so, but if your getting shells for stomp shouldn't you be getting somebody from your tribe to put them together for you? I've never heard of sending away for shell shakers.

Speaking of shells, does anyone know how to clean them once you have them? I know how to take care of birds and butchering and all, but I've never cleaned out a turtle shell.

BTW, Choctaw-how's St. Louis? I grew up out there...

i only know how to clean them the old way the old way is to take the turtle and chop off the head then sit the turtle out by an ant hill and then the ants will eat it and it will be nice and clean afterwards but it takes a long time for it to be completely clean by the way im still looking for that womans number i saw her the other day at a stomp dance and it completely slipped my mine but ill see her this weekend and ill get the information for u

Try the Creek Council House / Red Stick Gallery
106 West 6th Street Okmulgee, OK 74447 918-756-2324.
Was just there a couple of weeks ago and they had some can shell shakers.....around $130 (if I remember right).
Or maybe they can help you find someone selling them.
Good luck...

cleaning turtles

The best way to clean a turtle is to boil it in soup until the meat falls apart. Scrape the shell with a spoon or knife to get any meat that is clinging to the sides. If you do it this way, you get your shells and a sweet and tastey meal to boot. Another good way to get shells is to walk a creek or river bed when the water is low - look near the edge of the bank for the shells of long gone turtles, they will be devoid of meat and bone. This is my second favorite way of "cleaning shells," especially since where i'm from there are usually quie a few eagle feathers along the bank as well.

Don't forgot, killing without eating is just plain rude :D

The only bad thing about laying the turtle shells on a red ant bed is that they also eat away the pliable cartilgae that is on the shell hinge on the belly of the turtle. When you bend the little hinge to close the shell up....a lot of times it will come apart. Anyway.....seems like the ones I've done that way have been more likely to seperate.
I like the suggestion of walking the river banks and getting
turtle shells....I'll have to try that. All our rivers and creeks are up pretty high right now due to all the rain....but maybe later on this summer and fall would be a good time to search.

Talking shell shaker and maker

I am a shell shaker plus make my own cans. When i make them for others i usually ask if they want them light or heavy
some tribes wear 20 cans on each leg others thank the more cans they have the better they sound what they really do not know is it is how much rocks you use and what kind of rocks you use.is the trick to how they sound i use bailing wire most of the time except when i have leathers i will use them but that cost more.

A friend told me she used bird shot inside her cans to make a better sound. I've just used small rocks.....about a palmful.

Thank you for all your replies. I did finally get a set of shells from a gentleman how works with the Cherokee gift shop. Working on learning to dance with them.

The reason I was asking on-line was the fact that my grandparents tried to distance themselves from their tribal roots. They were existing in a time that it was better not to be of Native American descent. I am proud of my ancestory and am trying to "dig" things up and get involved.
