Where does everyone get their materials such as buckskin, sheepskin ect? For everything ive always bought those shamois or whatever that are made of sheepskin but are really for washing car..so i know there HAS to be a cheaper way to buy it in bulk or something.

My friend bought buckskin on eBay. Luckily we have a local tannery that braintans. My other friend made a special trip to buy buckskin at Idaho - that's where the best stuff comes from, I swear!

Hi Usdi...here's some advice on getting them cheaper...but without having been tanned:
Most if not all, deer hunters who have their deer processed commercially do not want, or even ask for the hides. Most processors (at least here in Mich) sell them to other companies for as little as $ 2 each...normally, they will be happy to sell them to you for let's say $3 than $2 to somebody else....
Also, taxidermy shops often have hides, both raw, as well as tanned, but they are expensive tanned...
Lastly, if you know any deer hunters, they can ask to have the hides back if they get these processed commercially...but it takes more than a few to make anything much...
hope this helps,
C

For fresh elk hides try looking up North American Elk Breeders Assoc. on the web. There's a list of breeders and farmers in there. You can get hides year round. Ask several taxidermists in your area where they send their hides. They get a bulk rate and may work with you or you could send them out yourself.
