LOL! Never got into that whole casino thing, have NO desire to go to Vegas! Much rather go to a good 'voo, or maybe Williamsburg. We were there July of 2001, taunting Lord Tarlington in our best 18th century garb.

THAT, my friends, is FUN!!!!!

The NDN casinos often have beautiful beadwork displayed!! It's fun. My husband LOVED them so much. He wasn't in good enough health to do the stuff you all do...but he would have appreciated it a lot. I don't like bugs, mosquitoes or being HOT. I like ventilation and a wind tunnel on me when I sleep.

Yeah, it's definitely different. I'd be afraid I would get bored...and that's something nobody wants is a BORED DOCAT! If it is too dark to bead, what do you do?

Well, I bet they have a low carbon footprint. I like this kind of living, we do it alot. I did find this quote kind of interesting:

Quote:
We must be careful as to not to insult any Native American people. We have to make an emphasis on the fact that we are historians and amature anthropologists and we are EMULATING the Native American women of that time period, not trying to be them.

I think if we accomplished this goal, that we honor them with our heartsas well as in our desire to present their history to the general public.

A long term objective of this society will be to construct a brain tan tipi using tanned elk skins done by the Women of the Group. The tipi will be used for demonstration purposes and will be the property of the association. One member will be appointed caretaker of the lodge.
Tanning can be accomplished with the help of sisters in the society and we are all here to help each other obtain this goal.
It looks like a whole lot of fun to me. It was day to day life for us for a while. I think its good people know these skills and that people are are willing to live, at least a little, this way. I think it is good for people. It reminds people that we live on a living planet that provides for all our needs, and that we don't need to keep destroying it for the sake of our wants. and I say this on the internet, yes.

I couldn't understand why they were doing that, but @LeannB explained more about it. I could not make out why they were doing these things, and come to find out there are others out there doing this as a hobby and for fun times.

Yeah, I thought you might like it (after I understood it). As for me, I'm going to be in Air Conditioning. I appreciate that hard work. Those women were physically fit too! Amazing!

LOL! Docat, you wouldn't be bored during the day......and would be working/playing so hard during the day that by the time dark rolls around, you'd be content to swap yarns around the fire (or listen to the drums), then turn in early.

Most folks in tipi town this January were in bed and snoring by ten.

JANUARY????? So like these women running around and doing things in the cold, you all do this up in the midwest too?

I did sometimes wonder what it sounded like when a young man played his flute into the night for his intended. I mean, it would have been heard by many, and if you had several engaged couples, you'd hear the flute in one direction and another. I just imagine that the sound was probably sort of pretty in the evening like that.

It was January, friend...but it was January in FLORIDA. And this year was quite pleasant. A bit chilly some nights, but the days were pretty. Some years we about freeze our buns off.

OK, @LeannB, now that's hard core. I mean you have to go to SCHOOL to learn what to do. That doesn't sound relaxing at all. I see a lot I wouldn't like...but one big one that I would.

I LOVE CANONS! If you get a few explosions going, it makes almost any time a fun time. The report gets my adrenaline running! I suppose the shootout would be fun too.

But the rest of it, I wouldn't like much. I don't like the theme to howl at the moon and the wolf stuff. BUT that's just for my taste, and I'm LAZY and LAZY people like me look at that and say, THAT'S TOO MUCH WORK!!! NO WAY!!!

So I'm going to stop dreaming of your vacation, because hardship to me, isn't a vacation. I think I'd rather read about history, than play it out. I think I'd rather eat out over toil over a smokey fire pit.

Yeah, I'm thinking I like the sounds of the night, but I don't like human sounds in the night...such as a neighbor's dwelling with people snoring by 10PM.

HOWEVER, thank you for sharing this info. I did not know folks did all this stuff. It looks lot of work.

This would probably be too many people for me, a group of ten or so would be nice, but more than that would get crazy. We usually go out in the woods and don't speak for hours and are very very quiet. That is our way of unwinding. We try to achieve that state of hyper alertness like when hunting. We we go we have to be careful.

But going with a few of these skilled people would be fun. Especially having company for crafts.

You can't beat a hunk of meat over an oakwood fire!

I dunno, @muskrat_skull, being quiet in the woods takes effort too. Ever try to keep KIDS quiet in the woods? You can forget that. Ever try to be quiet and not have your footsteps betray your position when you are WALKING ON DEAD LEAVES?

No, I don't want to do stuff like that. The woods is a nice place to visit (for an hour or so) but I wouldn't want to live there.

It's like there are bugs there. There are snakes there. If it rains, you get wet there. It's amazing to me that so many enjoy this history thing to the point of emulating it...and to go to all the hard work involved????

I'm too modern. I enjoy my refrigerator, my air conditioner, my stove that comes on when I turn a dial. I like my hot water heater that provides me with a clean shower. I like my washing machine, my dryer...I like my dishwasher...HOLY CATS! You have no microwave out there!!!!

No, I'll remain a modern NDN, even if it isn't as noble as being a historical one. And I will howl at losing at slots over howling at the moon.

Docat, you are a HOOT!!!!!

The "Howl at the Moon" thing was just for fun. At nine PM everyone was supposed to howl like a wolf, and you could hear it ripple thru the HUGE camp. Folks would chuckle at the community response and go on with their evening.

No microwave...but that's OK, I don't have one in our home, either. By choice. And I fired up the Baker's Choice wood cook stove this morning 'cause it was chilly, and have a roast in my Gr gr grandma's dutch oven, for tonight's meal.

This thread just shows...it takes all kinds to make a world! And that's OK.

I gotta share that with @muskrat_skull. She likes howling and all things wolfy. LOL It does sound like you all had fun...and we are all kinds, that's for sure...but...

Leann, YOU ARE HARD CORE!!

You are almost like an AMISH NDN! LOL No microwave? How do you heat up your fast food? How about your coffee when it gets cold? (docat losing it in mind-bending fashion)

How about COOKING IN JULY????? You can't cook on a woodstove in July!

I haven't ever owned a Dutch oven, but I think my grandma had one. She called it her SPIDER. It had feet on the bottom...not as many as a spider, but so it can be above coals. And then she could put coals over the top of it. She did that when they went camping in the fall during hunting season.

I asked her why she doesn't just turn on the stove in her camper, but evidently there are some things that need to simmer a long time, and the SPIDER was the way to go.

WOW. LeannB, you blow me away! Next thing you're gonna tell me is that you chop wood too. If you do, maybe wait till tomorrow to tell me so I can recover from all your hard work today.

LOL!!! Hey, if your Grandma isn't using the spider, you better keep that thing. Those are worth some $$ !

Naw, we have an electric stove for the summer. Altho Hubby has a new summer kitchen framed off our back porch for us to do our canning in, as it got kinda hot in the kitchen last summer, putting up all the tomatoes and such. But it got chilly today, and I got our woodstove going again. It heats almost our whole place. I miss cooking on it in the summer, and look forward to firing it up again in the Fall.

Nope, I don't chop wood, tho' I have split my share in years past. Hubby does our cutting and splitting, now, with our splitter.

We don't use a lot of fast food. Most meals are from scratch, or nearly so. Our own milk and eggs and beef and venison. We don't do coffee...altho I have a pot and some coffee here if someone has a hankering for it. I guess if that is hard core, I'm looking to get harder core. The more I look into GMO foods and what they do to a person, it surely does make me wonder if it's time to ditch them altogether. So that is what I am trying to do, and that involves more scratch cooking, from carefully picked ingredients. Not gotten rid of them altogether yet....but I'm getting there, lol!

I'll tell ya what....I made some tapioca pudding this morning on our stove that was OUT OF THIS WORLD. Nothing but very fresh Jersey milk, our own eggs, tapioca, sugar, salt and real vanilla.

WOW.

Like comparing ice milk and HaagenDass ice cream.

It puts the premade tapioca pudding to shame.

Amish Indian. Hmmm....

Maybe we can start our own tribe!!!

Nope, I don't chop wood, tho' I have split my share in years past.

Most meals are from scratch, or nearly so. Our own milk and eggs and beef and venison. We don't do coffee...altho I have a pot and some coffee here if someone has a hankering for it. I guess if that is hard core, I'm looking to get harder core.

LeannB, you do all this...AND NO COFFEE????????

Nothing like fresh eggs. The ones in the store are so old, they smell rotten compared to fresh ones. And the milk is terrible.

Stoves and dishes and all. Shoot, who needs that. Stick some meat on a stick. I do like my coffee though, that would be a hard thing to go without, I gotta have that, but river waters fine. We take one metal pot, that's it, just to boil water.

Maybe you get wet in the rain @docat but I'm building a house! There's plenty of palmettos out there around you too. You can save on rent--hee hee!

Oh, its easy to keep kids quiet in the woods. The night before you rent a really scary bear attack movie, and show them that. Then when they are out there you tell them if they make noise they will be attacked by bears or cougars or both.

I don't think I can handle wolf howling. My uncle used to do that when he was drunk and did it all freaking night, he was all messed up from vietnam, he was a marine, and then the fights would break out, so I'd be getting out of there.

Yeah quiet. That's the ticket.

Yeah, women can put my parenting advice book between their knees and keep it there! That's my advice! Heck, I don't know. Nah, kids are the greatest.

Hey you know you can sell those palmetto berries to the drug companies, I know people that collect them and sell them. I guess it will turn your tinkle into a sprinkle. HA HA @docat it made it over to this thread!!!
